BFFs just ‘do that.’ They communicate on a level that others don’t ‘get.’ They know when to laugh, cry, hug or shoe shop. They weather the storm of life together and, as my wonderful friend Julie put it, hold the umbrella for each other through storms.
My other wonderful friend Julie (I’m blessed with great Julie’s in my life!), and I had deep, wonderful, inspiring conversation (the kind that you can only have with a BFF!) that she wrote about that (for her homeschooling Facebook page) I wanted to share with you. Hopefully you too feel that you’re one of the lucky ones – or this inspires you (and your BFFs) to go for your dreams and not to settle.
Today’s mid-summer or mid-winter reflection: We are the lucky ones.
Last night’s late night phone call with a best friend has stayed with me this morning. I want to post her comments to me (while I’m hitting that mid-summer heat streak, exhaustion from all my striving, and homeschool business is ramping up to fever pitch moment):
“We are the lucky ones. We have work, love in our lives, and the personalities to not settle. We look for ways to grow, improve, and become people who make contributions that last and matter.
“We don’t give in to the status quo. We aren’t content to do ‘what we’ve always done’ just because we’ve always done it.
“We aren’t afraid to take risks, even though sometimes we feel afraid. We aren’t worried that others ‘won’t understand’ so much so, that we stay in situations that aren’t healthy or good for us, or our loved ones.
“We are willing to try hard and harder, and we are willing to rest when we need a rest. We make changes when they need to be made.
“We have friendships and optimism and hope for the future and our good health. We are the lucky ones.”
She ended saying, “Aren’t you glad you’re like this? Aren’t you glad you haven’t settled?”
I am. Even when I’m worn out.
My hope is you feel the same way.
It’s a brave work you’ve taken as your life’s vocation. It gets tiring, lonely, and overwhelming at times to homeschool. Heck, parenting is all of that without adding the burden of 12 years of education to the agenda! (Julie has a business called BraveWriter for literature/writing curriculum.)
But you wouldn’t have it any other way…at least, not this year, not today.
You are the lucky ones—embrace it. Because it’s true.
Are you (and your BFF) one of the lucky ones? Are you going for your dreams? Encouraging each other to strive to happiness and not status quo?
Share this with a friend. And remember how you have the lucky, awesome opportunity, as a BFF, to inspire each other. You are lucky!
