friendship thanksgiving“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more.”

Oprah Winfrey

I get asked a lot why I started Girlfriendology. I think most women find the topic of female friendship such a given or, on the other end of the spectrum, most men have never considered the relationships between women to be of any interest. And sometimes, women and men, just get it. Whatever response, I don’t mind.

I tell them how in 2005, two of my good girlfriends were dealing with cancer. How I struggled for how to be a good friend to them and how it made me consciously crave being around my female friends, both the ones dealing with cancer and the rest of my friends.

I tell them how I then did some research on the relationship of female friendship and found proof that girlfriends make us healthier, happier, less stressed, live longer and feel more beautiful. (Lots of great info in The Tending Instinct, by Shelley E Taylor and the ‘feel more beautiful’ benefit from a study by Dove skincare.) If they’re women, I remind them how being with their friends reduces, and often even removes, stress.

On this special day of giving Thanks, I’m so thankful for the gift of female friendship. I’m blessed with girlfriends who are there for me, who care about me and who love me even when I’m far from being the perfect friends. I’m grateful for the women and their friendships who have inspired me everyday on Girlfriendology. I’m honored to have had wonderful women along the way who have helped me making Girlfriendology an amazing community of women – including our ‘Chief of Insanely Brilliant Ideas’ the fabulous, fun and smart JUDI COGEN. (Thanks for ALL YOU DO!)

On this day of giving thanks, I want to keep this ‘attitude of gratitude’ going. I want to be thankful for my friends on a daily basis. I want to recognize the blessings of amazing people in my life on an on-going basis. I want to keep the feeling of thankfulness going all year.

Thanks for the gift of your friendship, for being a friend to your friends, for inspiring others in your life.

  1. […] We hope your Thanksgiving was perfect with just the right combo on your plate, to the people around the table and the activities that filled your (hopefully) four-day weekend. We hope you had ample time to just talk with friends – share your lives and maybe a slice or two of pie. And we hope you made some amazing memories with your family and friends that you’ll be thankful of for years to come. We have LOTS to be thankful for! (See ‘Thankful for my Friends.’) […]
