Recently, I have come across several articles about giving (and getting) compliments. It’s interesting how very big a difference it can make when someone you like and respect (or someone who is a complete stranger) offers a sincere compliment. Sincere compliments are offered from the heart without the thought of getting “oh, you too!” back in return.
Girlfriend Guru and style expert DONNA GAMACHE reminds us how important it is to compliment our girlfriends. We long for their approval, their appreciation of the time and effort we took getting ready for the evening. So the next time you think to yourself “she looks great” or “she did that really well,” don’t keep the thought inside; tell your girlfriend how amazing she really is.
Has this every happened to you? You plan a night out with your girlfriends. The next step is to plan what to wear, right? You find an outfit that you think looks great on you. In your mind, you look fantastic. Yet, you get no compliments or comments from your girlfriends. Now, it’s not that you have to get compliments from your girlfriends to feel confident in your personal style. If you know who you are on the inside and then reflect that on the outside, you will look your best and you can feel confident in that no matter what is said or left unsaid.
Yet, a little compliment from your girlfriends would be nice, wouldn’t it? Why don’t we compliment one another more often? I can use my own examples to illustrate my point. My girlfriends are quite stylish. Each one has found their personal style and dress to bring out their own unique beauty. I think we all know that about one another. Yet, there are very few compliments going around and I have some insights that may help us all.
First, we women tend to care more about our appearance and what others think about what we are wearing. That means we want more compliments. Would it hurt any of us to genuinely compliment one of our girlfriends if they look nice? On the contrary, it would do two things. It will make your girlfriend feel great and it would make you feel great too.
Second, we women tend to be a lot more critical of other women. It’s not something I am proud of but let’s face up to it and get over it. We are sisters and we should lift one another up by offering compliments when someone looks nice. Wouldn’t it be a wonderful world if everyone had a little compliment boost throughout the day. We would all walk a little taller and feel more confident.
Third, we women have a little jealousy thing going on…you know what I mean. We see a woman who is thinner, taller, and prettier than we are and we get jealous. Instead of wanting what you don’t have, try celebrating what you do have. Would it surprise you that others are looking at you and thinking she is thinner, taller, and prettier than me? Well, they do. Focus on your beautiful uniqueness and let go of being jealous of others.
To sum up, give your girlfriends compliments more often. Make them heartfelt and see how that changes your girlfriend dynamic.
