Does your girlfriend have a January birthday?
Gray, overshadowed by the holidays and dang cold outside (for most of us), January birthdays aren’t the easiest to celebrate – which gives us a great excuse to get creative, give great girlfriend gifts and make her feel so special by your amazing event! Customize the event to her personality and likes so she makes sure and has a perfect, memorable day. (And check out these January birthday girlfriend gifts!)
So, here are a few ideas for wonderful winter girlfriend celebrations – and we welcome yours in the comments:
Sledding Snow Party – Surprise her with fabulous fun outdoor party – adult style. Have some warm hot chocolate (Bailey’s or other liquor optional but definitely help with the cold!) or apple cider (again, adult versions are extra warming!). Make sure everyone comes prepared with layers of warm clothing and dry clothes to change into after the outdoor festivities. Set up a net, mark off the boundaries and play outdoor volleyball. Create a snowball bowling alley. Build a fort or have a ‘most fashionable’ snow-woman contest. Get in teams and race on sleds, inner tubes, cookie sheets or plastic trays (spray Pam on them for record speeds!). Be careful – but have fun. Make sure you get lots of photos of the birthday girl reliving her childhood and sledding with her friends! (Or like my girlfriends Anne, Deidre and Penny, go to Minnesota and go ice fishing and play snow golf. Warm, cozy cabin required!) Arrange for a sleigh ride to top off the event. To decorate or fill invitations, use fake snow (or make your own from rubbing styrofoam together). More ways to personalize the event: Create a hoodie with the event info and her photo on it through Cafepress. Have a photographer on hand to capture the event and Make it all about her!
Indoor Park/Gym - Take this idea from the kiddos too. Often gyms and sports centers have indoor facilities like courts for volleyball (or wallyball), game areas (dodgeball anyone?), indoor pools and some even have party facilities. Too cold for outside? Stay in and make it a wonderful way to celebrate her birthday together. Work off all the cake with some fun activites together!
Hobby Central – Does she love to knit? Scrapbook? Create? Find a local shop and host her party there. Get a bunch of girlfriends together and have a knitting lesson. Or, sign everyone up for a scrapbooking class (like at Archivers) or go away on a scrapbooking weekend (check out Crop-a-doodle-do B&B scrapbook retreat in IN). Or just get together at a girlfriend’s and craft together. Make her some great gifts and spend time together. That’s the greatest girlfriend gift!
Special Spa Day – Short days and cold weather can sometimes get a girl down or at least leave her needing a little pampering. Plan a full day at the spa with the birthday girl as the featured guest of honor. Bring in balloons for her chair for a hair make-over. Make arrangements in advance to have her favorite music playing and even have some buttons made that say “Happy Birthday Libby!” for party guests and the staff. Pop open the champagne, have some snacks and relax – in her honor.
Bowling Fest - In Minneapolis there is a fabulous bowling alley – Bryant Lake Bowl. No smells, smoke or sleezy area of town, this trendy spot has fabulous food and great drinks. If you have a bowling alley with a little class, great. If not, make due! Have any signage reflect her special day (even if it’s the big yellow sign parked out front of the alley). Want to go over the top? Have some bowling shirts personalized for her. Make announcements over the loud speaker about her birthday and bowling score. Get everyone in the bowling alley to sing “Happy Birthday” to her together!
Mall Diva Day - Meet at the mall and make a day of it! Give her gift certificates at her favorite shops and treat her to her own choice of gifts. Hit a few stores and have everyone pick out an outfit for the birthday girl. Take cell phone or Polaroid photos of her trying it on and see who wins for the best ensemble at the end of the day. Shop, do lunch, hit a movie, shop some more, then happy hour (a little early – but, hey!, it’s her birthday) and dinner. Consider all the walking and shopping as your workout and let yourself indulge in popcorn and treats! Ask others in the mall/restaurants to take pictures of the birthday girl and her entourage. Celebrate her birthday in a fashionable and fun way!
Okay girlfriends – what are your favorite ways to celebrate girlfriend birthdays – especially those winter wonderland ones!
