12 Days of Friendship | Girlfriend Gratitude

January 4, 2012 – 10:55 am

friendship girlfriends gay bingoThe holidays are behind us. A new year is ahead of us. And who’s here with us – through it all? GIRLFRIENDS!

Today we’re celebrating our final day in our 12 Days of Friendship – spread over the Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years holidays. We’re unwrapping our final present – the gift of girlfriend gratitude.

My girlfriend Jill and I had this conversation recently while hanging out at the dog park. Why is it that we generally gravitate to what is wrong in our lives? Why do we focus on the things we don’t have rather than the blessings of all the things we do have? Why do we overlook the joy to mainly see the struggle and perhaps injustice in our world?

It’s unfortunate but true – we don’t Read More »

Thankful for my Friends | Keeping the Attitude of Gratitude

November 24, 2011 – 11:19 am

friendship thanksgiving“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more.”

Oprah Winfrey

I get asked a lot why I started Girlfriendology. I think most women find the topic of female friendship such a given or, on the other end of the spectrum, most men have never considered the relationships between women to be of any interest. And sometimes, women and men, just get it. Whatever response, I don’t mind.

I tell them how in 2005, two of my good girlfriends were dealing with cancer. How I struggled for how to be a good friend to them and how it made me consciously crave being around my female friends, both the ones dealing with cancer and the rest of my friends.

I tell them how I then did some research on the relationship of female friendship and found proof that girlfriends make us Read More »

11/11/11, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving & #GirlfriendGratitude | Gratitude Homework

November 11, 2011 – 9:54 am

friendship thanksgivingOn this funny day of 11/11/11 and also Veteran’s Day (& less than two weeks to THANKSgiving), we’re feeling Grateful.

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.
John F. Kennedy

We’ve been thinking about Girlfriend Gratitude a lot this month – and our gratefulness for all the blessings in our lives – freedom, our rights to go/do as we please, for safety and a warm home.  We’re thankful for the Veteran’s and all the amazing people who have fought for our freedom and rights, who have sacrificed so we don’t have to. We’re thankful for our friends and family who make life worth living. When we stop to think about it, we have Read More »

Gratitude Actually …

December 1, 2010 – 6:23 pm

Friendship Facebook Twitter Girlfriendology Community FriendsHow’s your girlfriend gratitude?

Have you seen the movie ‘Love Actually‘? (It actually is one of our Girlfriendology favorite chick flicks!) It’s a romantic comedy based on several relationships – from a grieving husband and his son, to a wife dealing with her husband’s infidelities, to a couple who meet while working in the ‘adult film’ industry (which was a bit gratuitous to me at first, but eventually I came to over look it for the stories) and several other relationships. It’s extremely well-written and thought-out. You don’t realize it until the end, but all the relationships are intertwined in some way.

Hold that thought while weconsider this …

My BFF Cathy won an award today (Top Ten Women in Dayton Ohio). I drove up to attend the awards lunch and was so happy for the recognition she received for her contribution to numerous non-profits and activities in her region. She could have talked about all the time she spends in committees, how she’s allocated millions of dollars for her company’s foundation and her tireless volunteerism. But she didn’t. Not Read More »

A letter of Thanks (& wild ’stuff’ coming!)

November 24, 2010 – 3:07 pm

friendship girlfriend lessonsDear Girlfriend,

To know me is to know I’m a whimp! I tear up over OnStar commercials, how my dog looks at me (probably more hunger than love, but I like to believe!) and when I see a grandmother and grandchild holding hands. I love to watch strangers interact in a kind way on trains or even in traffic. And, I can’t help but be overwhelmed with the blessings in my life like friends, family and faith that the coming year will see me even closer to my dream of inspiring women and female friendship.

You guessed it, what makes me the whimp-iest are my friends! I am humbled by their inspiration, support and love. I am forever in-debt for their generousity, hospitality and acceptance. I feel deep, DEEP girlfriend gratitude – and hope you do too.

That’s what Girlfriendology is all about – inspiration, appreciation and celebration of female friendship.

But we would never be able to do those things without the support, encouragement and involvement of Read More »

For all our Girlfriends … we give thanks.

November 24, 2010 – 1:29 pm

Friendship girlfriend group friendsFor every girlfriend who blesses our life, let’s give thanks.

For the friends in our past who taught us how to be a better friend, who shared their lives with us, who gave us grace when we weren’t as good of a friend as we should have been … we give thanks.

To the sisters who are more our girlfriends because they know us so well – and don’t hold that against us(!) (-: … we give thanks.

To the women we may not even know personally who have gone before us to fight for our rights, to stand up to discrimination, to make the world a better place for us, our daughters, our friends and generations to come … we give thanks.

For the smiles of strangers, the kindness of others, the grace we’re shown on a daily basis … we give thanks.

And, for the friends who make us laugh when we want to cry, who spend time with us even when their schedules are full, who support our dreams and inspire us to be the best friend and woman we can be, who give and give and give some more and whose hugs can heal all things … we give thanks.

Who are you thankful for this Thanksgiving?

Daily Inspiration – Thankful

January 18, 2010 – 2:02 pm

Haiti Survivor“There is always, always, always something to be thankful for.”

(Be thankful for your friends!)

Christa Brelsford was just a student trying to helping others. She was teaching illiterate adults in Haiti when the horrific earthquake happened. Her foot was crushed and later amputated.

When interviewed by Matt Lauer on The Today Show, he asked how she was handling the news of her amputation. She quickly answered, “I’m alive.” Matt was visibly moved by her amazing acceptance of her situation and her gratitude. Even in the midst of strife, she recognized that there is always something to be thankful for.

What are you thankful for? Who in your life makes it better just by being there? What things do you need to appreciate more and take for granted less?

Why not show a little girlfriend gratitude today? If you have Martin Luther King day off, why not go grab lunch with a girlfriend? Send an email to say hi and that you’re thinking about her. Post a photo of the two of you on your Facebook and tell her how beautiful she is.

It can be the bluest, blah-est Monday but today you can brighting up your world with an attitude of gratitude and some time with your girlfriends. Life really is better, together with your girlfriends!

Thankful for Girlfriends, Thanksgiving and a ‘tough year’

November 26, 2009 – 1:31 pm
Thanksgiving - thankful for girlfriends

Thanksgiving - thankful for girlfriends

A friend just found a job after looking for a year. When I congratulated him, he replied, “It’s been a tough year.”

It has been … for a lot of us. Some friends have dealt with health issues and job loss. A college girlfriend of mine is in hospice care which is surreal and very, very sad. Another dear friend just lost her husband. More than one friend is trying to figure out their place in the working world while another girlfriend struggles with being supportive for her husband who is unemployed. Our 401k’s have decreased and our stress increased. Aging parents, ill family members and uncertain futures have plagued so many of us and I’m sure you Read More »
