BFFs, Slobs & Oprah?

September 13, 2010 – 11:27 pm

FRIENDSHIP Be a Better FriendWhy is your BFF your BFF?

Does she understand you better than others? Share more things in common? Has she been your friend through high and low times?

Part of the reason you’re her BFF, may be that you’re a great friend, and you share that in common with your ‘bestie.’ Having a BFF (or several BFFs) is like finding your way in the dark. Together you help each other, you enjoy the journey together, and as best friends, you look out for each other.

We’re looking at how to be Read More »

Be a Better Friend: Oprah & “The Mirror Effect”

May 20, 2010 – 5:14 pm

The mirror effectDo you and your BFF dress, talk, think and/or act alike?

The June issue of Oprah Magazine features an article called “The Mirror Effect: How to use Mimicry to Get Ahead in Life” by Jonathan Vatner. As it states: “Have you ever noticed that when you’re hanging out with your best friend, you tend to act and sound alike?”

The article goes on to share how copying each other’s style, words, emotions can strengthen relationships. Like these little girls mimicking each other’s behavior, we often Read More »

Girlfriendology Earth Day Logo

High point. Low point.

Girlfriends with Girlfriendology gerbera daisy flowerLisa, Vicki, Phyllis and I used to play this game at the end of a busy day at an industry tradeshow. It was our way to touching base with each other on the highs and lows of our day. Did our meetings and classes go well, or not? Did we meet the people we wanted to meet and have the conversations that we needed to have? Who better to share those highs and lows with than girlfriends who understand our goals and dreams?

Who do you share your highs and lows with? Who do you call when Read More »

Oprah asks: What would it take to you make you Happier?

April 15, 2010 – 10:41 am

Oprah 10 anniversary O magazineOprah asked. And we’re answering.

This month’s O Magazine is the 10th anniversary issue. (Congrats Oprah!) Editorially, as you would expect for celebrating a milestone, they chose to explore common themes and favorite recipes, and ask BIG questions like “What would it take to make you Happier?”

The article notes that two Wharton professors found (last May) that women are less happy today than we were a generation ago. That’s not a great place to start – considering that we always have such high hopes for what the future holds. And those hopes from years ago, didn’t happen to happen. Oprah and her editors recognized that we need to Read More »

Oprah, Books and Spring Cleaning – The Girlfriendology Newsletter

April 2, 2010 – 11:30 am

Gayle Kind and Oprah BFFs

What would be like to be the most famous BFF in the world? Do you think you’d feel any pressure to always say the right thing, to give the most perfect girlfriend gifts, shower her with compliments and never be grumpy?

That’s just one of the many things I’d love to ask Gayle King about being Oprah’s BFF. (Just putting it out there in case anyone knows anyone who knows Gayle!) Things like: Do you help Oprah with her Spring Cleaning? (Okay, I was just kidding on that one.)

What would your BFF say about your friendship? Would you be Read More »

The Oprah Friendship Quiz

April 2, 2010 – 7:18 am

Oprah Gayle Best FriendsI want to interview Gayle King about being Best Friends with Oprah.

I’m just putting that out ‘into the universe’ because I really do want to interview her about being the most famous BFF in the world. I wonder what pressure that might put on someone. That if you were a lousy best friend, your famous friend could always find other loving, adoring, best buddies to hang out with.

Even if you’re Oprah or Gayle, friendship is an effort. It requires work, loyalty, time, thoughtfulness, patience, flexibility, respect and love. It takes phone calls at inconvenient times, re-arranged schedules to make time for each other, eating birthday cake when you’re on a diet and Read More »

Keep the Girlfriend Gratitude Going

December 1, 2009 – 9:11 am

The more ’stuff’ life heaps on me (you know, the not-so-fun stuff, the things that stress you out), the more I need my girlfriends.

I’m so thankful for each of the wonderful women who bless my life, who make me a better person, who give me grace and support, who ‘do life’ with me. So thankful. Thanksgiving’s over but it’s always a great day to show some girlfriend gratitude! Read More »

TIP TUESDAY: Need your Girlfriend Advice

September 15, 2009 – 5:59 am

Tip Tuesday“A friend in need is a friend indeed.”

I did a little research on this well-known phrase. The Phrase Finder says:

Meaning

It is sometimes suggested that this phrase means ’someone who needs your help becomes friendly in order to obtain it’ … Most people understand it to mean, ‘someone who helps you when you are in need is a true friend‘. Read More »
