My Sheros? My creative girlfriends!

In the big scheme of things, “sheros” are the female heros that made “herstory” (aka: women’s history). On our recent podcast with author, designer, creativity guru MARGOT POTTER this past week, Margot talked about her ’sheros’ – Corrie Tenbaum, Oprah, Joni Mitchell, Frida Kahlo and Georgia O’Keefe.

Since life often is about the actual people who come into our lives and make an imprint on our personality and happiness, I propose that sheros also are the women who bless us on a daily basis with their girlfriendship. Keeping with our celebration of National Craft Month, I propose that we also have creative sheros. I’m blessed, having been in the craft industry for several years, to have some of these creative mentors as dear girlfriends. So, for the coming month I’ll introduce you to some of them.

I came across this photo from a Craft Industry event with a bunch of my creative girlfriends … Sue Warden, Jill MacKay, Marie Browning, Vicki Schreiner and more. I’ll introduce you to each of them and other creative women in the coming weeks to hopefully inspire and creatively motivate you! (They do that to me!)

Getting creative inspiration from a crafty girlfriend – like KATIE HACKER

I’m so lucky – my girlfriends inspire me so much! I was inspired to a marathon by my ‘jock’ girlfriend, Allison. Becky (“the Kitchen Goddess”) inspires me to be a better cook (although admittedly I don’t try often!). Jill inspires me with her jewelry designs. I love that about girlfriends. Together we have more fun, learn more and become more ‘ourselves’ through our female friends.

My girlfriend KATIE HACKER is creative, kind, talented and inspiring. She is author of more than 20 craft books including Hip to Bead, Katie’s Basics of Beading and 30-Minute Beading. She also presents Beading Lessons on the PBS show Beads, Baubles & Jewels, is a regular columnist for Simply Beads magazine and teaches workshops at national shows like the Bead & Button Show. Although she is best known for beading, she does lots of other crafts and she has some wonderful ideas for crafting with and for your girlfriends.

Katie Hacker – a girlfriend who inspires me (and also you!)

Do your girlfriends inspire you? One might be a runner or walker, so you decide to do a half marathon. Another girlfriend may be a wonderful chef, which inspires you to try new recipes. Your knitting girlfriend teaches you and soon you’re a knitting girlfriend too! I love that about girlfriends. Together we have more fun, learn more and become more ‘ourselves’ through our female friends.

Finding creative inspiration from Katie and the internet – gotta go create!

Beading with the girl scouts this week got me energized to pull out my beads and create! For further inspiration I also checked out my creative girlfriend Katie Hacker’s site. Katie has written more than 15 books on beading, writes tons of articles and also ’stars’ on the PBS show Beads, Baubles & Jewels. Her blog follows her creative life with her precious daughter Lily, her travels for fun and work, her crafting adventures, etc. A visit to her site is like a visit with Katie – always fun!

Did you know that you can watch segments from that show and other creative shows the Internet? HowToTVOnline.com has beading, kids crafts, scrapbooking and cake decorating videos – so you get to pick what show you want to watch on your own schedule. You can see lots of Katie on this site – check it out! (I always learn so much from these shows!)

Creative Inspiration from the Carol Duvall Show

One thing girlfriends like to do is share ideas, right? Well, in a ‘previous life’ I did about 250+ TV demonstrations/presentations on QVC, HGTV, PBS, DIY, etc. (I worked in the Craft/Hobby Industry and met some of the most fabulous, fun and creative women like Jill MacKay, Katie Hacker, Lisa Galvin, Marie Browning and more. They’re girlfriends I will have – and who will creatively inspire me – for the rest of my life!

Funny! I just found out that some of my Carol Duvall show tapings are online. I really don’t like watching myself on TV but hopefully you’ll enjoy! Check out these image transfer projects on Carol Duvall – part 1 & part 2 as well as my book, The New Book of Image Transfer. (Doesn’t my hair look funny?! And is “mender” really a word?!)

p.s. If you’re familiar with CAROL DUVALL, you know she is the craft queen of all time! If you know her personally, which I’m thrilled to say I do, she is the sweetest, most fun, generous and creative woman you’ll ever meet.
