Whether you’re reading this on August 1, 2010 – the first Sunday of August and official ‘International Friendship Day,’ and any random day after it – it’s a great time to celebrate female friendship. We women know that we couldn’t live without our girlfriends so why not plan some time together to celebrate your friendship?

Why we celebrate friendship

Today we’re celebrating day 14 of National Women’s Friendship Day. How are YOU celebrating girlfriends?
We celebrate Ground Hog’s Day, Birthdays, New Years Day. We honor St. Patrick, St. Nick, Independence and Anniversaries. Thanks to greeting card companies we have Grandparents Day, Teacher Appreciation Day and Administrative Assistant’s Day. We even have National Peanut Butter Lovers Month, Air Conditioning Appreciation Days (July, go figure), National Hot Dog Month (also July) and Mold Awareness Month (doesn’t that sound fun to celebrate?!).

Friends are everywhere. We just have to say “Hi.”
I met SUGAR JONES at a conference earlier this year. She’s the kind of girl who’s kind of a ‘walking party’ (in a good way!) and is thoughtful, deep and caring too. She’s smart, sassy and silly – a great combo! Go on a trip with your BFFs? Give all your girlfriends gifts? Send a card to every woman who has made a difference in your life?
It’s unfortunate, but with all the “greeting card produced” holidays (like ‘Second Cousins’ or ‘Forklift Drivers Day’*), a day like “International Friendship Day” gets very little attention. In fact, there were varying facts online – one site said it was the first Sunday in August, Wikipedia (on that Sunday) said it was the second Sunday in August. Friendship Lessons from Winnie the Pooh – really!

You gotta respect the bear. The fictional, furry, silly little bear who goes by the name of Winnie the Pooh.
In doing research on International Friendship Day, I discovered that, per Wikipedia, the United Nations named Winnie the Pooh as the world’s Ambassador of Friendship in 1997. I remember Winnie from my childhood but never was an ‘ambassador of Pooh.’ Read More »
