6 Years of Girlfriendology, 6 Years of Girlfriend Support | Life is Good

January 20, 2012 – 11:45 am

Friendship 6 years of GirlfriendologyWhat’s your girlfriend story? What things have you done because your girlfriend(s) believed in you? What dreams do your friend encourage?

Six years ago I struggled with why I ‘needed’ my girlfriends so much. Two of my dear friends, Dana and Allison, were fighting cancer and I was consciously aware of needing to be with my female friends (both of them and other wonderful women in my life). It was so strong that I created a blog to explore it. I called it ‘Girlfriendology’ and started exploring why women need each other so deeply.

Fortunately I found a profound book, The Tending Instinct by Shelley E. Taylor, which studied our need for female friendship and shared research findings and examples that proved – we actually do NEED girlfriends. In fact, female friendship makes women healthier, happier, less Read More »

Six Years of Female Friendship | Girlfriends Rule!

January 16, 2012 – 11:47 pm

Girlfriendology Friendship Flower heartWe all have a story. And most times they involve our friends, our wonderful, dearly loved girlfriends!

The story of Girlfriendology began with a girlfriend story (as, of course, it should!). Two girlfriends, Dana and Allison,  were dealing with cancer. I was overwhelmed with a need to be around my female friends – not just Dana and Allison, but all my friends. I wanted to spend time with my girlfriends to learn how to be a better friend to Dana and Allison. I wanted to be near the wonderful women in my life to give me strength and knowledge.

So, I created Girlfriendology as a ‘love letter’ to my friends.

That was six years (1/20/06), 1600+ blog posts, 275+ interviews with inspiring women (podcasts and BlogTalkRadio shows), 25+ blogger/social media conferences, a TV commercial and national newspaper ad feature, dozens of advertisers and sponsors (most recently our new sponsor Biz Stain Fighter signed on for our Read More »

Friendship Xina Sy, Positive Body ImageYour girlfriends love you just the way you are – do you? Girlfriend advice on a positive body image.

I love my friends – just the way they are. And I trust and love that they accept me as I am.

The challenge for so many of us women, is that we don’t see us through the eyes of our friends. We don’t see the smile lines as a reminder of all the fun times we’ve had together, or the size/style of our clothes as just an expression of who we’ve become.

We’re thrilled to explore this important topic with an expert on something that is so hard for us – positive body image. XINA SY shared her great girlfriend advice in our BlogTalkRadio/Girlfriendology interview. LISTEN IN! (and tell a friend who might need to hear Xina share her wisdom on Read More »

Women’s History Month | Wilma Rudolph, Inspiring Woman

March 2, 2011 – 3:54 pm

Friendship Girlfriends on a beachThe History of Women’s History

Where would we be without strong, passionate, inspiring women in history? We’d no doubt not be able to vote or own property, we’d be second class (or lower) citizens and we’d still struggle to a voice.

March is National Women’s History Month and we’re exploring how women in history have done amazing things that we can learn from and be inspired by. We’re considering the women in history who were our ‘girlfriends’ from the past and from whom we can learn to make life better for women in the future.

When I started working on women’s history about 30 years ago, the field did not exist. People didn’t think that women had Read More »

In February we celebrated #FriendshipMonth and shared dozens of ways to be a better friend. We took the romance out of Valentine’s Day to acknowledge the wonderful women who make our lives better every single day. (And even took time to show some ’sponsor love‘ to our friends at Biz and others who have supported Girlfriendology!)

Following our five year anniversary in January, we had five weeks of girlfriend prizes – that was fun! We even ended the month with Read More »

5 Years of Inspiring Female Friendship – The Girlfriendology Celebration!

January 20, 2011 – 10:40 am

Friendship 5 years of GirlfriendologyInspiration, Appreciation and Celebration of Girlfriends – for five years!

Five years ago today I wrote a ‘love letter’ to my girlfriends. Brought on by two dear friends dealing with cancer and feeling a very conscious ‘need’ to be around my friends, I wanted to express my appreciation and to explore why female friendship was so important to me and to all women.

Research confirmed the reasons we NEED girlfriends. Female friendship makes us healthier, happier, less stressed, live longer and feel more beautiful. Again, we NEED girlfriends. Husbands, boyfriends, guy friends can be great (we’re not against that) but there is nothing that can take the place of a dear friend who understands, cares, accepts and loves you. Nothing. Nada. No way. We need girlfriends.
