Trust and Grace | Girlfriends on the Road of Life Together
February 21, 2012 – 12:54 pm
How is a morning commute like my girlfriends? What do friends and freeways have in common?
I work from home, generally, so this morning’s commute to an early social media event threw off my schedule a bit. Instead of walking a few feet to my home office, I drove several miles downtown, in the dark (I’m ready for Spring!), and in the rain.
As I sped along, wanting to get there in plenty of time to chat with my social media buddies, I was conscious of the cars nearby and how the slightest swerve or blind spot, could radically change my life and possibly so many others. I thought about how driving is just one example of having to trust others – having faith that they pay attention to their and my safety, that they focus on the cars around them, the road conditions, the weather and that we all stay in our proper lanes.
We put our faith in strangers everyday, in so many ways. Every time we Read More »

Girlfriend Advice: Let’s Ask for What We Want, Let’s Simplify Things
January 18, 2012 – 9:14 am
Let’s make it easier to be happier – deal, girlfriend? or a lesson from my dog.
Sometimes life is simple. My dog shows me this everyday. He barks at the door, that means he wants out. If I come a little too close, he rolls over to show me his belly for a little loving belly scratch. And, when he’s hungry, I’ll find him in the kitchen staring (STARING!) at his food bowl. He’s pretty obvious about what would make him happy. And I, as a loving ‘mom,’ enjoy the clear (and sometimes funny) communication.
But we humans tend to complicate things. We say things we don’t actually mean and hope our friends and family will KNOW what we MEANT. We sometimes do things that don’t really represent how we things or feel – like going for months without speaking to each other and trusting, hoping our friends know that they’re still important in our life. We ‘get busy’ and don’t respond to an email, or we concentrate on work and not on the people who make it so fun to ‘not work.’

Turning Gratitude Inward | Girlfriend Advice from Cathy Wilke
November 26, 2011 – 5:02 pm
There is so much to DO this time of year! It seems we are barely finished with one celebration before it’s time to prepare for the next. And then there is shopping for gifts, decorating, and…Help, Girlfriends!
Guest blogger Cathy Wilke reminds us that during the rush, rush, rush, we need to take some time to show ourselves some gratitude. And we need to help our wonderful girlfriends, the ones we just could not live without, slow down and show themselves some kindness too.
Hey Girlfriends, move in a little closer. No, closer. Yes, that’s good. I have a little something I want to share with you this Thanksgiving. Part of what you’ll do on Thursday is take some time to be grateful for all you have. But I’d like you to add something to that juicy gratitude practice of yours, I’d like you to give a little love in the other direction. In the “you” direction.
You’re always ready to help a girlfriend out when she’s down, ready to tell her how great she is, what she’s really made of and rattle off a list of everything she brings to the party. What about Read More »

Thankful for my Friends | Keeping the Attitude of Gratitude
November 24, 2011 – 11:19 am
“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more.”
Oprah Winfrey
I get asked a lot why I started Girlfriendology. I think most women find the topic of female friendship such a given or, on the other end of the spectrum, most men have never considered the relationships between women to be of any interest. And sometimes, women and men, just get it. Whatever response, I don’t mind.
I tell them how in 2005, two of my good girlfriends were dealing with cancer. How I struggled for how to be a good friend to them and how it made me consciously crave being around my female friends, both the ones dealing with cancer and the rest of my friends.
I tell them how I then did some research on the relationship of female friendship and found proof that girlfriends make us Read More »

Attitude of Gratitude | Girlfriends to the rescue!
November 14, 2011 – 11:57 pm
Do you have an attitude of gratitude? Are you feeling grateful, thankful, blessed? Let’s talk about that …
Veteran’s Day … thankful for the brave women and men who have fought for our freedom, for the friends and family who have sacrificed their beloved to keep us safe and for the leaders who watch out over us. It’s a good time to remember that #LifeIsGood – right?
Thanksgiving … thankful for the pilgrims and travelers, the brave and the (sorry to say it, but possibly true) stupid who got on boats and found there way here. Grateful for the tradition they started of being appreciative of the little things in life … a little corn, a small bird to feast on, a warm hut to sleep in. Things we now take for granted – it’s great to be reminded to be grateful.
Maybe it’s Read More »

11/11/11, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving & #GirlfriendGratitude | Gratitude Homework
November 11, 2011 – 9:54 am
On this funny day of 11/11/11 and also Veteran’s Day (& less than two weeks to THANKSgiving), we’re feeling Grateful.
As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.
John F. Kennedy
We’ve been thinking about Girlfriend Gratitude a lot this month – and our gratefulness for all the blessings in our lives – freedom, our rights to go/do as we please, for safety and a warm home. We’re thankful for the Veteran’s and all the amazing people who have fought for our freedom and rights, who have sacrificed so we don’t have to. We’re thankful for our friends and family who make life worth living. When we stop to think about it, we have Read More »
