TIP TUESDAY #21 – Are you a locavore girlfriend?!

April 29, 2008 – 10:02 am

Tip TuesdayRight there on the front cover of our local weekly publication CityBeat was my old roommate and girlfriend, Valerie. So fun to see a familiar face on this newspaper and very cool to read about her and what’s she’s up to. Valerie is a ‘locavore’ - a person committed to eating food grown/produced within a 100 miles. I have so much to learn about this topic and am thrilled to have her blog as a resource to teach me! (See. We learn so much from our girlfriends!)

Sticking with our ‘green theme’ for April, this week’s TIP TUESDAY question is:

Do you notice/shop for locally grown/produced food? What have you learned from that process? (that you can teach us girlfriends!)

I’d love to get your thoughts on how to go green and go local. How can we be a girlfriend to ‘Mother Nature.’ What’s your tip? How can we eat more green and local, girlfriend?!

Going green with a girlfriend – and in style!

April 28, 2008 – 9:56 pm
for Renata

I want to be a better friend to Mother Nature! So here’s some ‘go green’ girlfriend advice to help me be more frugal and fashionable.

I promised myself. Now that I’m quitting the job (yeah!), I’m not going clothes shopping (boo!). Thing is, if I want to be brutally honest with myself, I don’t need new clothes when my primary wardrobe will be sweats or shorts and sports bra and t-shirt. (I just have to remind myself before I hit the cheap stores here in Cincinnati!)

My creative girlfriend DEBRA QUARTERMAIN has taken a vow of sans shopping for the year (aside from essentials like food and cleaning supplies). She has the advantage that she’s a self-professed ’stitch chick’ and can whip up a new outfit faster than I can try on cheap shoes and run to the check out.

For example (and inspiration), Debra took a broomstick handle skirt (that felt a little too snug) and disasembled it. She then created a jacket with the skirt fabric as well as a sweatshirt for the base of it. As you can see in this photo, she looks fabulous and all it took was a little creativity, a sweatshirt and a sewing machine.

Not all of us are quite so handy with the old needle and thread, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find ways of repurposing clothing and/or decorating it. Try something new – with something old. Or, grab a girlfriend and trade your ‘gently used’ clothing. Create a new wardrobe or just make a nice girlfriend gift. Create. Give. Have a blast!

P.S. And listen in to our podcast with Debra for her green lifestyle update!

Happy Earth Day Girlfriends!

April 21, 2008 – 11:54 pm

Girlfriendology celebrates Earth Day

Nothing makes the earth seem so spacious as to have friends at a distance; they make the latitudes and longitudes.

Henry David Thoreau

How wonderful it is to have friends – both nearby and distant. What a wonderful earth to be home to us all!

Spend EARTH DAY celebrating life, inhaling sweet flowers and paying note to the budding trees and blooming spring flowers. Take a walk with a girlfriend. Share a potted plant with a neighbor. Leave a card for a friend. Then listen in to a special edition of Read More »

TIP TUESDAY #20 – Help your girlfriends dress green?

April 15, 2008 – 9:50 am

Spring has sprung here in the mid-west. Bulbs have popped up and blooms have burst out, making it a colorful, wonderful reward for getting through winter! However, with it comes packing up the winter sweaters and returning the spring/summer clothes to the closet.

This annual rearranging ritual reminds me of all the stuff I have and don’t wear. (Does it do that to you?) And, now with the focus on going green,’ is it socially responsible for me to not buy more and/or be more conscious of what I buy? Read More »

TIP TUESDAY #19 – Girlfriend Tips for going Green at Home

April 8, 2008 – 1:23 am

Tip TuesdayIt may be trendy, and this may be Earth Day (month), but it’s still ‘not easy being green.’ Organic, all natural, recycled, recyclable, tree-free papers, eco-friendly, soy … the options are many and but the real choices (based on what’s best for the environment, does the job and is cost effective) are few.

Who do you turn to in the real world for the real answers to confusing issues like green home products? Your girlfriends - of course! So, this week’s TIP TUESDAY question is:

What are your tips for ‘going green’ for your home products?

For me, I’ve seen the new ‘green’ version of Clorox cleaning (non-bleach) products but I haven’t tried them – have you? (If so, please comment!) My one tip is to use white vinegar for fabric softener. No chemicals, dyes or additives, it really does remove extra soap in fabrics and leaves you with soft, surprisingly pleasant-scented laundry!

So, girlfriends – go green for us! Together we can be a girlfriend to ‘Mother Nature.’ What’s your tip? How can we be more green, girlfriend?!

TIP TUESDAY #19 – Recycling for your Girlfriend Gift Crafting

April 7, 2008 – 10:08 pm

Living green isn’t just a trend, it is a reminder that we need to follow this lifestyle to be responsible for future generations. How can creative, crafty women go green?

Well, lots of cool things have been made from recycled materials. Remember when we were kids and the piggy banks we made out of detergent plastic containers? The paper towel rolls that became our kaleidoscopes?!

So, recycle some of those memories and answer today’s TIP TUESDAY question:

What recyclables do you use in your crafting? What cool things have you seen made with recycled materials?

Okay, I generally have to start first and, I admit, this is a toughie. I do love metals cut from color tin containers (like funky or foreign soda cans). I’ve made elements from those info jewelry and garden decor. (Just be careful of the sharp edges!) I’ve salvaged hardware supplies (bolts, washers, etc.) that were spares and included them in art collages.

You’re creative – what recycled items have you used or are you planning to include in your crafting projects? What’s your favorite recycled materials with which to work? Share! Inspire! Create!
