Do I Really Have to Wear a Gown to Dinner on a Cruise? | Girlfriend Advice on Dressing for Formal Night

December 19, 2011 – 12:21 pm

girlfriends on a cruise travel guruPacking for a trip can be incredibly stressful. It’s hard to know what the weather will be, what functions will spring up unexpectedly. Sometimes even when you know there will be an “event,” it can be difficult to make the decision–in advance–about what to wear.

Girlfriend Guru and cruising expert Janet DeVito debunks the myth that only formal gowns are appropriate for the dressy “formal night” dinners of a cruise.

The formality of cruising was once considered one of the highlights of a Cruise Vacation, (and for some a deterrent!). Cruising has changed over the years. Large ships have evolved into floating resorts that do not subscribe to Read More »

Traveling with Girlfriends | Five Tips for Fun Travel with Friends by Kathlene Mullens

September 25, 2011 – 8:33 am

travel advice girlfriendsThinking about traveling with girlfriends? Had a difficult journey with friends in the past?

September is a special month around Girlfriendology – it’s International Women’s Friendship Month (aka: #FriendshipMonth) and we’re celebrating with 30 great guest blogs filled with fabulous girlfriend advice and wisdom.

Kathlene Mullens shares great tips on keeping traveling with your friends fun for everyone.

Having trotted the globe with my best friend, I have a few bits of advice to share that have helped us over some rough spots as well as to avoid future bumps in the road (or the air, whichever the case may be).

1. Decide what does and does not work for you before you firm up plans. Some of my friends are okay with sharing a room (or even a bed) for the sake of economy—some are not. Some of us rock stand-by and pray for those Read More »

Friendship, #NAMS & a Girlfriend Story | Bloggers and Marketers unite (:

August 24, 2011 – 9:09 pm

Friendship NAMS GirlfriendsGirlfriends make all the difference … in traveling, learning, sharing, laughing … ALL the difference.

This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend a conference in Atlanta, #NAMS6 (the Niche Affiliate Marketing System conference). It is a gathering of smart, savvy marketers who generously share their wisdom. (And, as I look for ways to grow and, to be honest, monetize Girlfriendology, it was a very insightful conference.)

Before I go into more on NAMS, first … a Girlfriend Story.

I traveled to Atlanta with my friend and fellow Blogger, ANDREA DECKARD. (She has the fabulous frugal lifestyle site - SAVINGS LIFESTYLE.) Andrea and I have been friends for a while but never had the opportunity to travel and room together. (We roomed with the fun and thrifty CRYSTAL COLLINS of THE THRIFTY MAMA – seen in the photo in the blue-ish blouse and with fun and fabulous girlfriend LAKESHA.)

Having taken the train in from the airport in the past, I suggested Andrea and I Read More »

Girlfriends are great exploring companions so, for our Month of Friendship challenge today, we’re encouraging you to get out of the house, leave the family at home and go explore your city with a girlfriend.

Why? Because you not only get to know your hometown a little better, you get to know your friend better too. Exploring together is the perfect way to spend the day – visit shops you’ve never visited, go to a park and walk the trails, pretend you’re Read More »

TIP TUESDAY #11 – Creative Girlfriend Travel Crafts?

January 22, 2008 – 10:58 am

Do you have some fun girlfriend gift craft projects?

It’s a little late for me, I leave tonight for Frankfurt, but I thought I’d ask for future reference for all of us travelers! This week’s TIP TUESDAY question is:

Do you take your creative projects with you when you travel? If so, how and what?

Again, a little late for me, I’m taking off for a business trip to Frankfurt and Paris today and I have my web marketing articles, and two Christmas gift books – I’ll check in from the road but please share tips among yourselves!

Just FYI, the December Girlfriendology Contest winners are announced on a new podcast – listen in for inspiring stories on why we’re thankful for girlfriends. And there is still a week left in the January Contest – enter and win prizes (like Starbucks gift cards and a Girlfriendology Journal)! Thanks Girlfriends! Bonjour!

P.S. Just FYI, I highly recommend travel books by Marybeth Bond. Listen to her podcast for great girlfriend or personal travel tips. Check out her web site for the “Gutsy Traveler” and her travel books for women!

TIP TUESDAY #11 – Girlfriend Packing Tips

January 22, 2008 – 10:49 am

NEEDED: Girlfriend Advice for packing for a trip!

It’s a little late for me, I leave tonight for Frankfurt, but we got some great comments to our travel tip request last Tuesday. So, let’s stay on this little travel journey together. This week’s TIP TUESDAY question is:

What packing tips do you have for traveling? Maybe it’s traveling alone or with the family – what do you do to make it easier, tighter, better – with everything you need??

Again, a little late for me, I’m taking too much I’m sure to Frankfurt and Paris, plus I need to have some room for things we’ll buy there. (We get to spend a day in Paris just ‘trend shopping’!) I’m just concerned I have the right shoes and warm enough clothing without taking my HUGE coat!

I’ll check in from the road but please share tips among yourselves!

P.S. Again, I’d highly recommend any travel books by Marybeth Bond. Listen to her podcast for great girlfriend or personal travel tips. Check out her web site for the “Gutsy Traveler” and her travel books for women!

Girlfriend updates, podcasts, teleseminar, travels … busy week!

January 22, 2008 – 1:07 am

I love hearing from my girlfriends. Updates on their lives and their family, job, pets and social activities. I love knowing what they’re up to and how they spend their time. I feel closer to them just knowing their schedules, their shopping finds, funny things their kids do/say. Even if, like today, it is a stressful update of a child in need of a miracle, I at least know what’s going on and will keep her family in my thoughts and prayers. Any update from a girlfriend just helps me connect with them and I love that.

So, in an effort to reciprocate, here’s the update from Girlfriendology Headquarters (aka: my very cold basement home office!):

1. The new podcast is posted with the December Contest Winners. Listen in for great stories on being thankful for Girlfriends – you’ll be inspired. They share so openly and express their girlfriend appreciation. And congrats to the winners of the contest prizes! (But, aren’t you all winners?!) Enter the January contest and take your girlfriend out for Starbucks on Girlfiendology!

2. I spoke this weekend with Dr. Karen Gail Lewis, a respected psychologist on relationships. She is amazing! She’s written books (like her latest, With or Without Men: Single Women Taking Control of their Lives), conducts Unique Retreats for Women, etc. We’ll interview her for the podcast on Valentine’s Day but I wanted to make you aware of a special teleseminar (for single women) she’s giving THIS WEEK! Check out her web site for all the details!

3. And finally, this time tomorrow evening I’ll be on a plane for Frankfurt (then on Friday will take the train to Paris). As much as I’m thrilled to be going (I love travel and especially international travel – on an expense account!), I would much, MUCH rather be going with a girlfriend (or two, or three!). I’ll try to check in via the blog from the road but will have to see if WIFI is easily accessible in Europe.

So, I won’t be on the blog much in the coming week but I’d love if you’d still read, comment, share, forward, spread the word on Girlfriendology. It is a wonderful world – so much so because of the women who bless our lives. Thanks for making it a wonderful world for me!

And, because I just found it and it seems to fit my journeys and love of girlfriends, here is a quote from an old issue of O magazine on friendship:

For happiness she required women to walk with. To walk in the city arm in arm with a woman friend (as her mother had with aunts and cousins so many years ago) was just plain essential. Oh! Those long walks and intimate talks, better than standing alone on the most admirable mountain or in the handsomest forest or hay-blown field (all of which were certainly splendid occupations for the wind-starved soul). More important even (though maybe less sweet because of age) than the old walks with boys she’d walked with as a girl …” Grace Paley

Thanks girlfriends! Bonjour!

p.s. And … be a friend to Girlfriendology! Share this blog with your girlfriends by clicking the Facebook LIKE button below and also, when you’re on our Facebook page, SHARE IT WITH YOUR GIRLFRIENDS. (Please?!) Thanks girlfriend!

Girlfriend Advice: Airport Travel Tips

January 16, 2008 – 10:27 am

Girlfriends TravelingAs girlfriends, we can be a better friend by sharing information and insights.

Monday and Tuesday this week found me in Atlanta (and airports in between). Next Tuesday I head for Germany and France which means more airports and an even “longer time to hang in the sky.” (Sorry, some old John Denver line!) I wish it was a girlfriend getaway – that would be much more fun!

So, this week’s girlfriend question is:

What tips do you have for airports and flying?

Don’t get me wrong, I generally LOVE airports. The energy, the people watching, the movement of people on a mission going somewhere with a whole bunch of strangers, the interaction and conversations, the anticipation of ‘time travel’ to a different destination … it is a luxury that I recognize and appreciate for the opportunity.

However, there are also the long security lines, even Read More »
