HOPE Sings – Share the song with a friend

March 11, 2010 – 12:02 pm

Beautiful Bird - Wikipedia

“HOPE is a thing with feathers, that perches in the soul & sings the tune without words & never stops at all.”

Emily Dickinson

One of my first trips with my husband included a drive across Texas. It was a sunny, memorable day as a beautiful bird floated gracefully above the road ahead of us. Down the road, another bird graced us with her ‘air show’ and hence, we began noticing the aerial ‘angels’ watching over us. To this day, we still notice when birds seem to watch ahead for us and often point up and say, “There’s our friend.

HOPE is that kind of friend. Out of the blue it can Read More »

Women: Finding Yourself, Girlfriend Daily Inspiration

March 10, 2010 – 2:34 pm

Mom and daughter“You never find yourself until you face the truth.”

Pearl Bailey

I love my friend Judi. She is smart, very sassy, funny and always there for me. She’s beautiful, inside and out. But you might not know that from her photo on her social media bios. I don’t know if she is waiting to lose weight or get a new hair style, if she wants professional make-up or a magic wand of some sort. (And, to be honest, she doesn’t need any of the above!)

She’s much prettier than she was 10+ years ago when her photo was taken. Sure, she Read More »

International Women’s Day and Extraordinary Women – Like You

March 8, 2010 – 11:08 am

“What separates an ordinary woman from an EXTRAORDINARY one? The belief that she is ordinary.”

Jody Williams (Nobel Peace Prize Winner)Girlfriends having dinner together

Jody Williams went from teaching English as a second language to leading the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, a coalition whose goal was to abolish the production and use of anti-personnel mines. She won the 1997 Nobel Peach Prize then was one of the founders of The Nobel Women’s Initiative – six Nobel Peace Laureate women who together work to support women’s rights around the world.

Betty Friedan had an hour to kill between appointments so she stopped by the Ritz and ordered a whiskey sour. The bartender told her, “I’m sorry, I can’t serve you” and instructed her to go into the ladies’ lounge where she could have her drink. Women weren’t allowed to drink at the bar alone. She went on to write books and, per Wikipedia, is credited with sparking Read More »

Daily Inspiration: Life is What You Make It

March 4, 2010 – 9:01 am

Flowers“Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be.”

Grandma Moses

This isn’t necessarily a ‘happy’ story but hopefully you’ll stick with it to see the message …

My dear friend Becky’s husband was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive and terminal cancer last Spring. They made the best of it with a trip to Europe and an amazing closeness and peace that they shared. (You can read more on this blog post and their blog. Becky gave me permission to share her story.)

Their approach was ‘live full, die empty’ and they did just that. With Becky, Read More »

Margaret Mead

Back in 2005, JENNIFER DAVIS had three careers: one in project management, another as a jewelry designer and yet another as a stay-at-home mother to her two sons. She always had a passion for the people and beauty of the African continent. In fact, she’d been saving for a trip to Africa for nearly 15 years. Then she answered a call for to work in partnership with a church in Mamelodi, South Africa. Daily Inspiration: One Reason Why You’re My Best Friend

March 2, 2010 – 8:24 am

Best Friends“I love the way you live in the present as much as you possibly can, treasuring the past without clinging to it.”

Lorraine Bodger, 500 Reasons why You’re my Best Friend

Today’s ‘little’ challenge – Make a list of the things you love about your girlfriends. Have they been there for you when others weren’t? Do they give you the only birthday gifts you really like? Do they make you laugh when you want to cry?

What special things do they do to stay in touch? How do they show you how much they care about you? When have they come to your rescue or aid?

And, then what are the little ways that they make you smile? Like the joke they know cracks you up. Does just Read More »

Daily Inspiration: Sweet Baby James

February 25, 2010 – 11:43 am

The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time

“The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time.”

(Enjoy ‘the passage of time’ with your friends!)

I love that saying. Actually, I love it so much, and think it is so true, that I put it on my dining room wall (above).

That’s partly why I love the whole concept of female friendship. Passing time with our friends is what life is really about. Spending special moments in each others’ company creates friendships and makes memories.

So, how do you ‘pass your time?’ What are your priorities when it comes to the precious commodity of your time? Read More »

Daily Inspiration: Two Little Words to make Everything Better

February 23, 2010 – 11:59 am

Winter women friendsSilent Gratitude isn’t very much use to anyone.”
Gertrude B Stein

The teacher who saw something special in you. The conversation that changed the direction of your life. The sincere compliment that came on a day when you didn’t feel beautiful or loved. The smile that told you everything would be okay. The hug that held you when you needed comfort.

We have a lot to be thankful for - for friends and family, for health and happiness, for love and laughter. And for the amazing people who care about us, who share in our lives and who honestly want only the best for us. Read More »

Daily Inspiration: The Olympics of Smiling

February 19, 2010 – 7:16 am

Winter Olympics Snowboard

“Everyone smiles in the same language.”
(Make a friend – smile!)
Unknown

I love the Olympics. I love the energy of people who are passionate about life and what they do. I love the diversity and kinship of people from various countries connecting and competing. And I love the smiles that you see on the faces of fans and athletes. (It’s actually even befitting in the Midwest to have snow during the Olympics – like we share the same frosty air and sparkling surroundings!)

We speak different languages, eat different cuisines, have diverse skills. We are different, yet all the same – all striving for the best we can be. We all share the same response to achieving our goals and reaching for our dreams. We react to pleasure and humor in the Read More »

Daily Inspiration: Light a Candle Girlfriend …

February 17, 2010 – 12:33 pm

Girlfriend happy hour“If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it.”

Blush make-up on my cleavage. (aka: my faux cleavage!) Vertical stripes. (Not the right body type for horizontal lines!) Photos taken from above. Yes, I’ve learned a lot from my ‘fella females!

That’s one of the wonderful benefits of girlfriends. (And one of the reasons we started Girlfriendology.) Women sharing with women is a wonderful thing. We learn so much from each other – from silly stuff like make-up tips and shoe sales, to important things like how to take care of a sick child or an aging parent. Thankfully, as long as we have female friends, we pass along knowledge like sharing a flame to light a million candles.

Together we’re more powerful and smart.
Together we’re unstoppable. Read More »
