Girlfriend Memories of 9/11 – Phone a Friend, Spend time together

September 11, 2011 – 9:08 am

Friendship SCD Girlfriends 911Where were you on 9/11? And, how has it changed your relationships? How has September 11th had an impact on your Friendships?

On 9/11/01, I had just returned from a conference of creative women. (We all worked in the craft and hobby industry and designed products for craft companies, wrote craft books, went on shows like Carol Duvall and sold craft products on QVC – it was a fun job!) It was my first conference with this group and I had skipped a ’special vacation’ in order to join this organization and get involved. (I eventually was on the Board of Directors with the fabulous and amazingly creative women in the photo here.) I flew home from our conference on 9/9, rested from our excessive girlfriend late-night conversations on 9/10 and on 9/11/01, by 6:30 a.m. I was on the treadmill in my basement (trying to made a dent in the calories I consumed with my new favorite female friends!).

Matt and Katie were on the Today Show and were the first to share the news that life was altered in a huge way and in an instant. I stopped the treadmill and stared at the little TV in front of it. Then I woke up my husband and we stood in front of the TV for hours. STOOD. We couldn’t even Read More »

Want to be more Creative? Spend time with your Girlfriends!

May 9, 2010 – 4:39 pm

Creative girlfriends, silly sistersI’m blessed with creative girlfriends. They love knitting, scrapbooking, painting, jewelry-making and anything involving glitter and glue! They have artsy homes and wear funky clothing. I’ve seen certifiable creative women who dress only in their signature color. My friend Cindy loves purple – A LOT. She wears purple clothing, jewelry and even purple mascara – now that’s creative in my opinion! (And how can I not think of her when I see anything purple while shopping?!)

Some of my girlfriends don’t consider themselves ‘creative.’ They are more Read More »

May 24, 2008 – 1:19 pm

Carole Duvall and Debba HaupertJust her voice and laughter makes me miss her. And, from reading several of the message boards on HGTV, DIY and several blogs, a lot of you miss her too.

If you’re at all crafty or have kids who enjoy making things, you’ve heard her voice and laughter. And, you’ve no doubt been inspired by this amazing woman. CAROL DUVALL has been on television for 57 years (and her re-runs will hopefully continue for many years!). TIP TUESDAY #24: Hey girlfriends – what’s your favorite hobby/passion?

May 20, 2008 – 11:15 pm

Tip TuesdayI’ve heard that if you look back to your childhood, before boys had an impact or peer pressure was in it’s teen madness, you’ll find the things that you genuinely love to do. Maybe it was acting, drawing, talking, cooking or even dressing up. When we were eight to ten years old, we did whatever we loved – and why not?!

My mother is an artist so it is no surprise that I grew up doing crafts, drawing people in church, making sand art (a long-lost talent!) or other creative exercises. I designed the cover of my Jr. High school year book and won an award for a paper mache dragon that I made with a girlfriend. Is it any wonder that several decades later, I ended up in the craft/hobby industry?!

Paper crafting with Carol DuvallLast week I interviewed CAROL DUVALL for the Girlfriendology podcast. On TV for 56 years, this Read More »

Creative girlfriend gift lessons – from you girlfriends! (and new contest prizes!)

April 16, 2008 – 10:16 am

Carole loves to make napkin rings from rope and wine corks. (And she’ll show us how in a future blog.) Jane loves the afghan her friend crocheted for her. Dana loves to knit scarfs and other wonderful accessories for her girlfriends. (And I know, because I’ve been the lucky recipient!) And last month’s grand prize winner was Veronica who told us about her girlfriend Gloria and the creative way that she helped her friend through tough times.

For the March Girlfriendology Contest we asked YOU for YOUR favorite creative, even ‘crafty,’ girlfriend gifts to give or receive. You shared some wonderful stories which we featured in our new podcast. Listen in for girlfriend inspiration!

Shrinky Dinks and Girlfriends! (and BlogHer, with smart women!)

April 5, 2008 – 6:05 pm

In my creative past (in the craft and hobby industry), I attended several tradeshows for businesses in the creative industry. Often I shared a room with Lisa, Vicki, Phyllis – sometimes Jill, Marie and others. Never was there a trip where craft materials and tools weren’t part of the suitcase contents!

Since I was attending BlogHer (an event with smart, savvy women – see the Girlfriendology blog for more updates) this week and I want every woman to know about Girlfriendology, I made the above pendant to wear. And, like at the craft tradeshows (and usually accompanied by my creative roomies), I made it in the hotel room – the night before the event. Actually, this project took a little prep – I had to print off the words (Girlfriendology logo, Podcasts, Contests, etc.) on Shrinky Dink (white) and heat/shrink them before I left for the trip. Then I packed a clasp, yarn, beads and wire in my suitcase and off to NYC I went! In the hotel room, I put it all together for this pendant.

I think it created some buzz for Girlfriendology. I know it generated some conversations and the opportunity to spread the word about what Girlfriendology is and what I am doing to building a global girlfriend revolution! (Watch out world!)

In addition to Girlfriendology clothing and carrying my Girlfriendology “Stand by your man, but sit by your girlfriends” bag, I need to make some more creative jewelry to start the conversation with women on why they need to appreciate and celebrate their female friendships. You’re creative – any ideas?! Thanks Girlfriends!

p.s. I just wish some of my creative girlfriends had been there with me! (Even if you snore – Vicki and Jill!)

My Knitting, Beading, Crafting Girlfriends

March 14, 2008 – 9:39 pm

We’re off to meet Dana and Bear (aka: Barry) for dinner. Dana was introduced to knitting a few years ago when I was part of “Purple Tree” – a home party biz that offered all kinds of creative kits. I’m sure out of some obligation to me to purchase something, brought home a knitting kit. Well, the rest is history. She now is a knitting goddess. And, as a knitting goddess would do, Dana emailed confirmation of our dinner plans along with a warning that she’ll probably knit at the restaurant while we have a glass of wine. No worries. Creative girlfriends are allowed – to be creative!

That event also reminded me of a very fun evening with my girlfriend (who is a beader, designer, author, blogger) Katie Hacker when we went to a local casino on a bus trip her father organized. I don’t gamble and I don’t recall Katie being at all interested in it either, so I had brought some beads and supplies along and Katie and I happily beaded in the casino bar. I believe we made a gift for the female bartender!

Do you have girlfriends who encourage and inspire your creativity? Isn’t life much better with them around?! Call up a girlfriend. Ask what she’s knitting (or beading, painting, sewing, etc.) and let her bring it along on your next adventure. Do the same, so she gets to see your latest expression of your creativity. That’s how we learn. That’s how we inspire each other. That’s why we’re such good friends!

March 9, 2008 – 10:25 pm

Anyone who is a friend of my friend JILL MACKAY, is a friend of mine! (I love Jill and am in awe of her creativity and amazing design talent!) Jill has talked about her friend, and fellow super talented designer, BRENDA PINNICK for months – how she is so wonderful and kind and helpful and … well, you get the picture.

Now, as girlfriends and girlfriend of girlfriends often do, I’ve become friends with Brenda through Jill and the Internet. In fact, Read More »
