Lessons from a Girlfriend – Podcast with DEBBIE MACOMBER, women’s fiction author

May 27, 2008 – 12:00 am

Girlfriendology podcast guest and author DEBBIE MACOMBER

DEBBIE MACOMBER is a mega-author. She has over 100 million books in print! Her new book, Twenty Wishes, is a wonderful, inspiring story of women who each make a list of their wishes and then together find the way to their dreams.

As welcoming and friendly as her books, Debbie spoke with Girlfriendology on our latest podcast. There is so much to learn from someone this gifted at understanding women, friendships, passionate hobbies and life. So, here are just a few of the lessons I learned in interviewing Debbie:

  • LIVE YOUR LIFE WITH PASSION - Debbie is passionate about her knitting, writing, children and grandchildren (not necessarily in that order!). She loves to travel and spend time with her family and friends. She gets up at 4am each morning to start her day preparing and reading, then writing. (You have to be passionate about something to get up at that time each morning!) You can tell by talking with her that she loves life and loves sharing the lives of her characters with her millions of fans.
  • LOVE YOUR FANS – Debbie is currently on tour to 20 cities (for the 20 wishes!). Her fans come out in swarms, in any weather and with a desire just to see her, talk with her, share their knitting or tell her about their girlfriends. She even shared how the initial idea for this book came from one of her fans. She obviously loves these women and finds such joy in getting to know them, hearing about their lives and sharing her hobbies and writings with them.
  • MAKE TIME FOR YOUR GIRLFRIENDS – As she shared in the interview, Debbie has a group of girlfriends that she meets with weekly for breakfast. They help each other through life, share their joys and frustrations, and, after talking with Debbie, they must laugh a lot! Even with her busy schedule, she keeps them as a priority in her life. She’s a good girlfriend!
  • TAKE TIME FOR YOUR HOBBIES - It doesn’t have to be knitting, but just find an activity that you love and allow yourself time to spend doing it. And, when you can, combine your hobbies! Debbie obviously loves to write and knit. So it was natural for her to combine them with a companion bookTwenty Wishes with knitting patterns from the book’s characters. She even has designed a line of products for knitters (but versatile enough to be used for lots of other hobbies and ’stuff!).

So, what are your wishes? Dreams? Goals? Do you have them written down or perhaps represented on a vision board? Do your girlfriends know what your dreams are and do they cheer you on in reaching them?

Read Twenty Wishes then write out your own wishes. Share them with your friends. They’ll help you achieve them! Visit Set Your Wish Free for information on a special contest to reward someone with $10,000 to set their wish free!

Thanks Debbie for making time for Girlfriendology in the midst of your national book tour! It was an honor to speak with you and to be able to share Twenty Wishes with your fans through the podcast and through our Girlfriendology Contest prizes. Thanks for your inspiration and for introducing us to so many girlfriends in your novels.

P.S. And send in your story for our monthly Girlfriendology Contest! You could win a copy of Debbie’s fabulous new novel, Twenty Wishes – just send in a girlfriend story and you could get back a great girlfriend novel! Thanks Girlfriend!

TIP TUESDAY #24: Hey girlfriends – what’s your favorite hobby/passion?

May 20, 2008 – 11:15 pm

Tip TuesdayI’ve heard that if you look back to your childhood, before boys had an impact or peer pressure was in it’s teen madness, you’ll find the things that you genuinely love to do. Maybe it was acting, drawing, talking, cooking or even dressing up. When we were eight to ten years old, we did whatever we loved – and why not?!

My mother is an artist so it is no surprise that I grew up doing crafts, drawing people in church, making sand art (a long-lost talent!) or other creative exercises. I designed the cover of my Jr. High school year book and won an award for a paper mache dragon that I made with a girlfriend. Is it any wonder that several decades later, I ended up in the craft/hobby industry?!

Paper crafting with Carol DuvallLast week I interviewed CAROL DUVALL for the Girlfriendology podcast. On TV for 56 years, this Read More »

Hi Girlfriends! Just wanted to share that thanks to YOU and your support and enthusiasm for ‘girlfriendship,’ GIRLFRIENDOLOGY IS GROWING! We’ve already expanded the podcasts to two/week* and we’ve added videos, as well as bunches of prizes in our May Girlfriendology Contest! We’re busy updating the website and plan to launch it this summer.

Now, we’re adding more of YOU! We’re looking for experts to be the girlfriends we want to talk with when we have a question or just need some advice. You’d be part of our network which would mean that we would publish your stories, advice, articles on your area of expertise as well as interviews on our podcasts, etc.

Specifically, we need the following experts: a Mom (or a couple, depending on age of your children, specialties and other factors), Crafts, Fashion, Food, Travel, Books, Small/Home Business and other general women’s topics.

You must be friendly, fun, helpful, a good writer, an expert in your field and willing to provide blog articles and assist with podcasts on a regular basis. In exchange, Girlfriendology will promote you and your site/blog on Girlfriendology.com, podcasts and upcoming events and opportunities.

If you or a friend are qualified and interested, please contact debba(at)girlfriendology(dot)com. Thanks girlfriends!

* And with two podcasts/week, we need more ‘girlfriend authors and experts’ to interview. Please send us your ideas! And listen in for our recent KATE JACOBS interview and coming conversations with CAROL DUVALL and DEBBIE MACOMBER!

TIP TUESDAY #19 – Recycling for your Girlfriend Gift Crafting

April 7, 2008 – 10:08 pm

Living green isn’t just a trend, it is a reminder that we need to follow this lifestyle to be responsible for future generations. How can creative, crafty women go green?

Well, lots of cool things have been made from recycled materials. Remember when we were kids and the piggy banks we made out of detergent plastic containers? The paper towel rolls that became our kaleidoscopes?!

So, recycle some of those memories and answer today’s TIP TUESDAY question:

What recyclables do you use in your crafting? What cool things have you seen made with recycled materials?

Okay, I generally have to start first and, I admit, this is a toughie. I do love metals cut from color tin containers (like funky or foreign soda cans). I’ve made elements from those info jewelry and garden decor. (Just be careful of the sharp edges!) I’ve salvaged hardware supplies (bolts, washers, etc.) that were spares and included them in art collages.

You’re creative – what recycled items have you used or are you planning to include in your crafting projects? What’s your favorite recycled materials with which to work? Share! Inspire! Create!

Anyone who is a friend of my friend JILL MACKAY, is a friend of mine! (I love Jill and am in awe of her creativity and amazing design talent!) Jill has talked about her friend, and fellow super talented designer, BRENDA PINNICK for months – how she is so wonderful and kind and helpful and … well, you get the picture.

TIP TUESDAY #12 – Crafting Trend Ideas?

February 7, 2008 – 11:08 am

This week is the BIG Craft and Hobby (CHA) Tradeshow in Anaheim, CA. Unfortunately, after years of attending I won’t be there any my creative girlfriends will – dang it! However, I wish them all a great week where they make new contacts, get some business, learn about new products and techniques, get inspired and hopefully catch me up on everything when they get home! (Jill, Katie, Lisa, Linda, Tammy, Vicki, Julie – I wish I was there with you!)

So, in keeping with that event, this week’s TIP TUESDAY question is:

What do YOU think are the new craft trends for 2008? What materials, techniques, colors, etc. will influence the products and projects that inspire us?

Just returning from Paperworld in Germany (a HUGE tradeshow for the paper/office/craft world), I did see a few new trends. Shattered glass (like safety glass from car windows) is big in mosaic – no more cut glass. Paper mache was in the craft magazines and projects on display.

So, what’s your girlfriend advice on craft trends? What do YOU think will be BIG in 2008? More Knitting? Crochet? Mosaic? A different style of Beading/Jewelry? Share your creative ideas with your girlfriends!

Getting creative inspiration from a crafty girlfriend – like KATIE HACKER

December 17, 2007 – 11:00 am

I’m so lucky – my girlfriends inspire me so much! I was inspired to a marathon by my ‘jock’ girlfriend, Allison. Becky (“the Kitchen Goddess”) inspires me to be a better cook (although admittedly I don’t try often!). Jill inspires me with her jewelry designs. I love that about girlfriends. Together we have more fun, learn more and become more ‘ourselves’ through our female friends.

My girlfriend KATIE HACKER is creative, kind, talented and inspiring. She is author of more than 20 craft books including Hip to Bead, Katie’s Basics of Beading and 30-Minute Beading. She also presents Beading Lessons on the PBS show Beads, Baubles & Jewels, is a regular columnist for Simply Beads magazine and teaches workshops at national shows like the Bead & Button Show. Although she is best known for beading, she does lots of other crafts and she has some wonderful ideas for crafting with and for your girlfriends.

Just listen to our NEW podcast with Katie
and she’ll inspire you – to craft for and with your girlfriends, to make time for your friends, to connect with your creative girlfriends through the internet and just to be more comfortable with your own creativity!

Check out Katie’s blog for updates, creative ideas and her recent Ornament Round Robin (see following blog).

Do your girlfriends inspire you? Please join in the Girlfriendology December CONTEST - which asks for stories on girlfriends you’re thankful for. Spread the girlfriend gratitude! Honor your girlfriend by telling everyone how much she inspires you! (and win prizes in the Great Girlfriend Gift Giveaway!) Thanks Katie!
