Creative Holiday Gift Ideas

November 18, 2008 – 1:08 pm

Creative girlfriends, silly sisters

My girlfriend Katie shares some Creative Holiday Gift Ideas!

Leave it to my crafty girlfriend Katie Hacker for the following creative holiday gift ideas! (Katie also did a fun podcast interview with Girlfriendology about crafting for and/or with girlfriends – listen in!) Author of dozens of creative books, Katie creative passion is beading. She beads almost everything in a very creative and fun way (not a tacky ‘bead the dog’s waterbowl’ kind of way – not that that there’s anything wrong with a beaded waterbowl!).

And, since we’re always looking for great girlfriend gift ideas, we love sharing these creative holiday gift ideas (and often frugal girlfriend gifts) from our fabulous female friend Read More »

TIP TUESDAY #24: Hey girlfriends – what’s your favorite hobby/passion?

May 20, 2008 – 11:15 pm

Tip TuesdayI’ve heard that if you look back to your childhood, before boys had an impact or peer pressure was in it’s teen madness, you’ll find the things that you genuinely love to do. Maybe it was acting, drawing, talking, cooking or even dressing up. When we were eight to ten years old, we did whatever we loved – and why not?!

My mother is an artist so it is no surprise that I grew up doing crafts, drawing people in church, making sand art (a long-lost talent!) or other creative exercises. I designed the cover of my Jr. High school year book and won an award for a paper mache dragon that I made with a girlfriend. Is it any wonder that several decades later, I ended up in the craft/hobby industry?!

Paper crafting with Carol DuvallLast week I interviewed CAROL DUVALL for the Girlfriendology podcast. On TV for 56 years, this Read More »

Creative Girlfriends – Have a question for the ‘queen of crafts’ CAROL DUVALL?

May 9, 2008 – 10:20 am
The Canadian HGTV logoImage via Wikipedia

Around 1999 I kept hearing guests on my favorite craft show (CAROL DUVALL, HGTV) talk about being a “craft designer.” Being creative and loving crafts, and knowing that I didn’t want another corporate job, I decided to join them – even without really knowing what that was! So, I joined an organization and packed up to go to my first craft/hobby industry trade show.

I wandered the aisles and aisles of craft manufacturers shy about presenting the little booklet I had of craft projects I’d made – my ‘portfolio.’ About an hour into the show, I noticed a little swarm of people nearby. In the center of them was the fabulous Carol Duvall! I was star-struck and tried not to stare. I discretely watched for a little bit then eventually moved on. I wandered a couple aisles and ran into the entourage again. More observing my creative idol (Hey! That should have been a show!) and I continued on my way.

I remember the exact location (the Fiskars booth) where later that morning I again encountered the Carol Duvall entourage. Still being shy, I remembered the fable about God sending along a tree limb, helicopter and boat to save a drowning man. (Who died and asked God in Heaven why He didn’t save him. And God answered, “Who do you think sent you the limb, helicopter and boat?!”) After three brief encounters, I mustered up the courage to approach one of Carol’s producers.

Carol Duvall, TV personality and Girlfriendology founder, Debba HaupertBy making myself attend a tradeshow alone and then taking initiative to talk with Carol’s team, I changed the course of my career. I later appeared on The Carol Duvall Show on HGTV and DIY Network a dozen times and later taped with Carol on the “Shop At Home” network.

Having the experience of taping with Carol lead to over 250 on-camera demonstrations and sales (including QVC and A.C. Moore videos) and to giving me credibility in the craft/hobby industry. Plus, I had the wonderful opportunity to work with a professional, charming, sincerely nice and fun woman. I admire her for her creativity and her contribution to the craft/hobby industry by inspiring so many of us and teaching us new skills, etc.

Girlfriendology is definitely about inspiring each other and Carol has been a creative girlfriend to us all! So, next week I am going to tape a podcast interview with Carol and hear from her how she was able to achieve so much and the wonderful women who helped her do it all! (And, to these women – Cherryl, Kelly, Allison, Donna, Karen, Linda – and so many more – I know she worked with the best!)

Carol Duvall\'s new book: Paper Crafting with Carol DuvallHere’s where YOU come in! Would you like to leave a question for Carol? Call 206-202-9005 and tape a question for Carol and we’ll have her answer them on the podcast next week. Leave a message like, “This is (name) from (city) and I wanted to ask Carol … (question)” then at the end of the call, make sure and leave me your email address (and please spell it out slowly!) so I can enter you in the drawing below.

Carol generously shared with Girlfriendology three copies of her new craft book “Paper Crafting with Carol Duvall” to give away to creative girlfriends out there. (It’s a great girlfriend gift to give! ) Leave a comment on this blog with your email address or leave your email address on your phone message for Carol to be in the drawing.

Lesson: You have what it takes inside, you just have to step out of your comfort zone and go for your dreams. Go for it Creative Girlfriends!

p.s. Sign up now for Girlfriendology podcasts to hear Carol and other inspiring women! And don’t forget to call 206-202-9005. Thanks!

Another creative girlfriend Shero – Julie McGuffee

March 14, 2008 – 12:31 am

My creative girlfriend JULIE MCGUFFEE is yet another shero! She has a long history of crafts and inspiring others to be creative, she’s been host of Making Memories TV show and Scrapbook Memories as well as appeared on Shop at Home network, A.C. Moore Videos, etc. She’s written craft books and created products, etc. She’s talented and creative.

What really makes her a shero is that she is also a cancer survivor and uses her experience to educate others. Read her blog for a touching story on her cancer and that which took a young man she knew. If you’re like me, reading this makes all the trivial stuff just disappear and brings a new focus on the important things – like appreciating every day, time with friends, being creative, etc.

Thanks Julie for sharing your story in your blog and for sharing your creative inspiration with the world. I’m glad you’re my creative girlfriend!

Finding new creative girlfriends on the Blog Party …

March 13, 2008 – 1:44 am

At the grocery store, yoga, book club, out walking the dog or at church, you never know where you’ll find a new girlfriend. That’s part of the excitement of meeting new women – they could become your best friend, inspire you to be a better friend, challenge you to reach your dreams or teach you lessons (or crafts!) you need to learn.

Because this week is the Ultimate Blog Party, I checked out some of the 1300 or so women’s blogs that were listed. I found several that were Read More »

Hey Girlfriend – new article on connecting with females (friends & family)

March 7, 2008 – 7:42 pm

Hey Girlfriend! That’s the name of my new column in “Today’s Creative Home Arts” club magazine. I’m very fortunate that the editorial team recognizes and believes in the power of ‘girlfriends’ because now I get to write for, and connect with, these creative subscribers.

Julie Stephani, the editor, is an author, TV personality and creative guru. You might remember her from a podcast we did together on the importance of being creative and crafting with your (primarily female) family and friends. Julie is well respected in the craft and hobby industry and is a very inspiring woman – and, yes!, she is a creative Shero of mine!

I was honored to be accepted into this world of women who are involved in a variety of crafts – home decorating, beading, sewing, painting, etc. They’re very versatile! I wanted to let you know about the Creative Home Arts Club too because you can get a free copy, join it and receive the magazine (and get the “Hey Girlfriend” articles!) or you can just join their online community and have access to so many creative women through their online Forum. Check it out!

Katie Hacker – a girlfriend who inspires me (and also you!)

December 17, 2007 – 10:43 am

Do your girlfriends inspire you? One might be a runner or walker, so you decide to do a half marathon. Another girlfriend may be a wonderful chef, which inspires you to try new recipes. Your knitting girlfriend teaches you and soon you’re a knitting girlfriend too! I love that about girlfriends. Together we have more fun, learn more and become more ‘ourselves’ through our female friends.

My girlfriend KATIE HACKER is inspiring. She has written more than 20 craft books including Hip to Bead, Katie’s Basics of Beading and 30-Minute Beading. She also presents Beading Lessons on the PBS show Beads, Baubles & Jewels, is a columnist for Simply Beads magazine and teaches workshops at national conventions like the Bead & Button Show. Although her specialty is beading, she does lots of other crafts as well and she has some great gift ideas for crafting with and for your girlfriends.

Listen to our NEW podcast for women with Katie
and she’ll inspire you – to craft for and with your girlfriends, to make time for your friends, to connect with your girlfriends through the internet and just to be more comfortable with your own creativity!

Check out Katie’s blog for updates, creative ideas and her recent Ornament Round Robin (where creative women all made ornaments and share their ideas – the final one will happen this Thursday).

Do you have girlfriends who do inspire you? Please share with Girlfriendology in our December CONTEST - which asks for stories on girlfriends you’re thankful for. Please share. Spread the girlfriend gratitude! Honor your girlfriend by telling others how much she inspires you! (and win prizes in the Great Girlfriend Gift Giveaway!)
