Freedom, Girlfriends, Harleys | Perspectives by Guest Blogger Bethany Parks

January 30, 2012 – 8:37 am

breast cancer, harley davidson, motorcycleSome days being a girlfriend is easy. Other days it is much harder to be a friend–and to let others be a friend to you. Girlfriend and guest blogger Bethany Parks shares her story of friendship, motorcycles, and living with breast cancer.

She was dressed in a long sleeve black Harley T-shirt carrying a big black Harley coffee mug and her long auburn red hair was tied back in a black leather wrap.  She had mischievous green eyes and a laugh that warmed my heart. I liked her immediately. I introduced myself with something close to, “Hi. My name is Bethany. Will you be my friend?  And can you teach me to ride my bike?” Aimee did her Aimee kind of thing and smiled her brilliant smile and said, “Sure.”

The purchase of my Softtail Deluxe was probably the beginning of my mid-life revival. It was daring. It was sexy. It was a seven hundred pound statement of my freedom, gorgeous with all its chrome, white wall tires and braided leather work. My Harley. A total Read More »

I am Ashamed of Myself | Confession and Resolve from the Faux Diet Queen

January 27, 2012 – 4:30 pm

weight loss fdqNone of us are perfect. And we all have days when we are less perfect than usual. Often we can ignore that in ourselves, but sometimes we have to stare reality in the face and ‘fess up to the things we’re not so proud of.

This week, the Faux Diet Queen stares into her (somewhat twisted) reality and shares some of what she sees in the mirror.

The Faux Diet Queen (or as we affectionately call her, FDQ) has agreed to share her latest (and last) weight loss journey with us as a regular feature at Girlfriendology. We hope you’ll join us to cheer her on, nudge her back on track when she strays, and generally giggle along.

I’m  ashamed of myself.

Not just because I ate all the pasta at dinner tonight before the kids could get seconds, although that probably wasn’t one of my shining moments. And not because I Read More »

CHANGE THE COURSE OF YOUR LIFE, ONE CHOICE AT A TIME

One of my favorite poems is Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken. You may have studied it in high school. Frost created that wonderful image of two roads diverging in a yellow wood with the traveler standing at the point where they separated, trying to decide which road to take. Have you Read More »

Get Over It! How to Resolve a Fight with a Girlfriend | Guest Blogger Rachel Kim

January 25, 2012 – 7:19 am

Getting over a fight, saving a friendshipIt happens. Sometimes we get into arguments with our girlfriends. Like we have little disagreements like which restaurant to go to for dinner or where is fair to meet ‘in the middle.’ Sometimes we have bigger disagreements with bigger consequences.

Guest blogger Rachel Hyun Kim shares her experience of getting into a fight with a friend and some of the lessons in forgiveness that she learned for mending an important friendship.

The last time I got into a fight with a friend, it was not a fun situation. Feelings were hurt, fingers were pointed, and words were said that could not exactly be taken back. Now, this fight could have easily gone towards the way a lost friendship, filled with awkward interactions with the former friend. But is that worth the years of fun and friendship we shared in the past? My friend and I swallowed our pride and moved past our fight, thus preserving our friendship and future together.

Fighting happens, even with the best of friends. However, girlfriends Read More »

What have YOU been doing for the past six years? | Six Years of Girlfriendology

January 23, 2012 – 11:40 pm

Friendship 6 years of GirlfriendologyHappy Birthday to us! Happy Birthday to us! Happy Birthday Girlfriendology! Happy Birthday to us!

Six years ago, on January 20th, 2006, Girlfriendology.com was ‘born.’ It started from a response to two girlfriends, Dana and Allison, dealing with cancer, as well as just a need to be around female friends. A little research confirmed – there’s a reason we NEED girlfriends! Female friendship actually makes women healthier, happier, less stressed, live longer and feel more beautiful.

So, I started blogging about female friendship. I was inspired by the amazing women who shared their stories about their girlfriends, who confirmed that our female friendship keep us afloat when we think we’re drowning. Women shared their lives and how their girlfriends had been there for them when they so needed it. We all know that feeling!

Thanks to the women who have helped us grow our online community of women to over Read More »

7 Healthy Ways to Be a Better Friend | New Year’s Resolutions

January 21, 2012 – 11:06 am

Friendship Wordless Wednesday Christina Girlfriends fitness friendsWe want our girlfriends to be healthy and in our lives for a long time, right? Well, why not get healthier with a friend or a bunch of BFFs? It’s much more fun and likely to be successful. Here’s how:

  • Take a walk with a Girlfriend(s) – Nothing like a few blocks, trails or miles to catch up on our lives and reduce our stress with a little ‘girlfriend therapy.’ Plus, it doesn’t seem like exercise when we’re laughing and sharing stories and time with our favorite walking buddies. Set a regular walking time like every Saturday morning or Tuesday after work. Then schedule anything else around that time. Make exercising, and your friendships, a priority. You’ll be glad (and healthier) you did!
  • Resolve to be Healthier with a Friend – Girlfriends who make resolutions together (like to get healthy/fit) are more successful than when we try to go it alone. Join up with a girlfriend to challenge each other to set and reach your fitness goals. Accountability with a Read More »
