Hi there! Cathie here
Okay – so introduce yourself and tell us where you live and, if according to the book title, you’re having some Cheap Cabernet! (I am!)
Can you BELIEVE it!? ALL I’ve got in the house is EXPENSIVE Cabernet — which I’m saving for this weekend!
So I’ll be sipping this water w/lemon tonight!
Cathie! (Can’t you expense ‘cheap cabernet’ as a book publicity expense?!) (-:
Shall I tell you a bit about how “Cheap Cabernet: A Friendship” came to be written?
YES! I was just going to ask you that!
Oh, HONEY!
I WISH I could somehow get my vino comp’ed.
That would be a “not yet”!
In 1994, I put an ad in the Boulder, Colorado newspaper for a “made up” women’s group — WOW: Women on the Way.
The ad read, “… to a bar, an insane asylum — whatEVER. 249.1638.
(Hopefully some girlfriends will join us. We tend to have more ‘lurkers’ who want to see the discussion.)
** If you’re lurking, JOIN US! **
I got DOZENS of phone calls from that ad and spent a week having to “filter” through them all — it was before answering machines and voice mail.
I distilled those phone calls down to 8 women — all of whom showed up at my house on a Weds. night.
Cathie – I love the WOW Title! (I’m working on a book on girlfriend groups, might have to mention that one!)
One woman that showed up — “Denise” — sauntered into the first meeting LATE.
She had an “air” about her — a little bit “entitlement,” a little bit “bored with it all” — if you know what I mean.
Such a life changing decision – to just pick 8! How did you select who made it? (Who didn’t sound too crazy/mass-murderish?!)
LOL! “Mass-murderish” — those were nicer phone callers
When in that meeting do you it ‘clicked’ for you about Denise?
We were going around the room and introducing ourselves to each other. I was sort of the “facilitator,” asking each person their name, where they lived, were they married, kids, etc.
Denise would sort of interrupt and ask abrupt questions of the other women. Something like, “Well, why do you live in THAT part of town,” or “Really? you’ve never been out of Colorado?”
It was sort of irritating and it put me off a bit
She also queried me about my age. I was 38 years old at the time and my kids had left home for college — I was a very young single mother for many years.
Denise was surprised that I had kids — especially college-aged kids — as were many people.
THEN — something different happened.
Cathie – I have a off-the-topic question – how did you remember so many details ten+ years later. Your conversations where really funny and girlfriend-y!
(this is all from the first chapter of “Cheap Cabernet: A Friendship,” by the way — it’s the chapter called, “Wanted: Women”
That first meeting is crystal clear in my head, for some reason. You know how you can remember an event in your life like it happened yesterday? … that’s one event that comes back to me so easily …
Yes! I forgot to mention the Book links and your site – CHEAP CABERNET: A FRIENDSHIP http://bit.ly/CathieBeck & Cathie’s site

The “click” at that first meeting happened when Denise complimented two, $5 paintings I’d purchased from a Russian artist.
I could tell she did not make superfluous compliments.
It charmed me that she appreciated the art — I did not know — but came to learn — she was an award-winning artist and business woman herself.
We became FAST FRIENDS — in a GARGANTUAN way — that very moment!
Cathie – I mentioned this in our interview on BlogTalkRadio, but I know the words to “Up against the wall redneck mother” (‘the perfect C&W song,’ supposedly!) Love how that started the book!
Wow – I love when you can tell the exact moment that two people connect. So special!
