Guest Blog by Claire Cook, author of our Book Club book – Wildwater Walking Club
Hey girlfriends – do you love a good book, a wonderful author and a great Book Club?!
Well, we’ve got all three for you today – plus a wonderful guest blog from the author of ‘The Wildwater Walking Club‘ (our May Girlfriendology Book Club book) – CLAIRE COOK.
Take a Walk on The WILDWATER Side with Me!
I was sitting on a restaurant patio overlooking the ocean on a perfect summer day, eating lunch with a friend and doing one of my favorite things: listening to the conversation at the next table.
A group of women was laughing and telling stories. One of them turned sideways in her chair and wiggled her toes in her flip-flops.
“Boyohboy, do I need a good pedometer,” she said.
Immediately, she started to giggle. “I mean, pedicure.”
Freudian slip, hormonally-fed brain freeze, or early sign of Alzheimer’s, it’s the kind of word retrieval glitch that happens to all of us.
And it gave me the idea for my sixth novel, The Wildwater Walking Club!
I went home, dusted off my pedometer and started walking 10,000 steps a day while I imagined the characters. Soon I knew that I was telling the story of three women – Noreen, Rosie and Tess – whose lives were in crisis and who would figure out their next chapters together while they walked and talked (and talked and walked!). Along the way they’d learn what so many of the rest of us have figured out – that time flies and getting fit is actually fun when you’re walking with your girlfriends!
So many women have written to tell me The Wildwater Walking Club has inspired them to move forward in their own lives, to reconnect with their old friends and to make some new ones – and to lace up their sneakers and hit the road! I hope it does the same for you.
Come have some fun with me at the Girlfriendology book club on May 31 at 7 PM EST!
Claire Cook wrote her first novel in her minivan when she was 45. At 50 she walked the red carpet at the Hollywood premiere of the movie version of her second novel, Must Love Dogs, starring Diane Lane and John Cusack. She is now the bestselling author of seven novels, including The Wildwater Walking Club and the upcoming Seven Year Switch, which will be published in June. Thanks so much to author Claire Cook for #1 – writing such a wonderful girlfriend book and #2 for inspiring so many of us to get walking (and talking!) with our girlfriends! (You should have your own line of pedometers and lavender laundry products!) We look forward to chatting online with you on Memorial Day night for the Girlfriendology online Book Club!
