Wilma Rudoph
Dear Girlfriend,
Wilma Rudolph was born prematurely at 4.5 lbs., with 19 brothers and sisters, and caught “infantile paralysis” (caused by the polio virus) as a very young child. She recovered, but wore a brace on her left leg and foot which had become twisted as a result. In the 1960 Summer Olympics, she became the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field during a single Olympic Games, despite running on a sprained ankle at the time. As much as she could have credited herself with overcoming medical challenges, she acknowledged that we don’t make it in this world alone. We need our friends.
Lately I’ve sought the counsel of my girlfriends (thanks especially to Judi, Allison and Becky) on major decisions and goals for my life. Could I have done it on my own? Actually, I don’t think so. I need my girlfriends to help me see things I can’t. I trust them to look out for my best interest. And I value their wisdom and opinion.
Don’t try to go it alone. For one thing, that’s really no fun. Together we’re stronger, smarter, happier, healthier. Together we accomplish more, dream bigger dreams and grow. Reach out to your friends … because life really is better, together with your girlfriends!
