Dear Girlfriend,

Did you watch the wedding episode of Pam and Jim on ‘The Office?’* Since they knew their wedding day would speed by, they decided to take ‘mental photos’ of the event. It was a very sweet reminder to capture memories as they’re happening.
Just like their TV wedding ‘video’ (which, of course, only lasted 45-50 minutes), 2009 and the holidays are speeding by. Before we know it, it will be a new year and the 2009 holiday season will just be a memory.
Life comes at us fast. Perhaps we need to capture some ‘mental photos’ of our lives – the happy times with friends, caring conversations, hugs, smiles. Take note of the fun visits you’ve had with friends this year. Enjoy the parties or shopping rituals of the season with your favorite females. Look ahead to 2010 and plan New Year’s Eve with the girls or a fun get-away trip for the winter/spring.
Who do you capture in your ‘mental photos?’ Make some mental, or digital, images of the friends who you wouldn’t want to face a holiday or new year without. Remember … life really is better together with your girlfriends!
* Yes, I know this is the second ‘Office’ example in a month, but I couldn’t help it! Plus, my girlfriends Rhonda, Deana and Terri (Happy Birthday and thanks for being such a wonderful friend!) are Office addicts so I thought I’d throw it in just for them! (-;

“Friends are those rare people who ask how you are & then wait for the answer.“
Unknown

Becky is one of my ‘Friday morning coffee girlfriends.’ Each week we ‘do life’ together. Our conversations weave together the serious subjects in our lives like jobs and families, with silly stuff including our dogs and the size of our butts. I cherish our conversations because we really talk and listen to each other.
Very sadly, Becky lost her husband almost two weeks ago. Tomorrow is his memorial and all of her girlfriends will be surrounding her with love and support.
In the midst of her sadness and the many decisions she’s been dealing with, she always stops to ask how I am and what’s new in my life. That really humbles me. She cares about things in my life that are so small and silly compared to what she is going through and I so appreciate her amazing, loving friendship.
If she can do it in her situation, can’t we? LISTEN. Actually practice ‘listening.’ Call up a friend and ask how she’s doing – then wait for an answer. Show an interest in her holiday plans. Ask about her family and her job. Don’t make it about you. Ask and then listen. Be that girlfriend.
And send good vibes toward Becky tomorrow. You don’t have to know her personally to know she’s a great girlfriend.
Have a fun, friend-filled holiday.

Great reminder to capture “mental photos” as life speeds by (and feel free to use The Office to support your message as often as you’d like!!) I thought the wedding episode was very touching–I’ve watched it twice and still haven’t deleted it! Thanks for the birthday wishes too!
