We have hearts for love, happy faces, xoxox and ’smiley face’ emoticons. You can ‘Facebook friend’, follow on Twitter, connect on LinkedIn. There’s lots of ways of showing your relationship status … well, at least for some types of relationships.
Female friendship makes women healthier, happier, less stressed, live longer and even feel more beautiful. (See The Tending Instinct book or this Dove study for proof of that.) We gain strength and inspiration from each other, have a trusted source for advice, and have someone who loves us for who we are – that’s a pretty important role, with limited options for expressing it.

And, we can give a certain color of rose to show how serious our romantic feelings are.
