Women and Water – who knew it was an international crisis?

Water dot orgIt started this morning with a lengthy shower. Later coffee and water satisfied my thirst. I watered some plants before leaving for BlogWorldExpo and filled the pets bowls. It even was raining. I never noticed all these until I sat down to write this.

I don’t think about water. It’s a convenience I take for advantage. It’s a utility service that I don’t even notice, much less feel appreciation. And it’s definitely something that never stops my plans, impacts my schedule or ruins my dreams.

But for millions of women, it is. Water is an obstacle in their day. The search for water takes up countless hours of their days – every day!

I’m thrilled to work with Water.org to raise awareness of this international crisis. I’m happy to enlist WAHM’s and women bloggers to help spread the story. And I’m hopeful that by doing this, we’ll be able to free up women in these countries where water isn’t a convenience to have time to do more with their lives – from spending quality time with their children to pursuing their dreams.

It’s not just a water issue, or a women’s issue, to me it’s a girlfriend’s issue too. I wouldn’t want my friends to have to deal with this. And I want to support women, in my neighborhood or across the planet, to be able to dream and to see those dreams come true.

I’d love it if you could share the following story and videos with your friends. Together we can make the world a better place, one friendship at a time – and one tweet, blog or conversation where we share information that will make it a wonderful world for women.

PLEASE SHARE …

Water dog org women filling water at wellEvery 15 seconds a child dies from water related diseases. Equally tragic, but not widely understood, is the affect of the crisis on the lives of women. Lives that are defined not by opportunity and possibilities, but by the never ending search for water.

Millions of women and children in the developing world spend untold hours daily, collecting water from distant, often polluted sources, then return to their villages carrying their filled 40 pound jerrycans on their backs. And though women are responsible for the majority of food production in their villages, their productivity is dramatically impacted by this constant struggle.

But the real tragedy is that the problem is so easy to solve. For just $25, Water.org can provide clean, sustainable drinking water for one person for life, bringing opportunity, hope and possibilities to lives without them. ($25 for a whole year – isn’t that amazing?!)

Since its inception in 1990, water.org has helped hundreds of communities in Africa, Asia, and Central America gain access to safe water and sanitation. All of the projects we support are self-sustaining, with organizational and financial structures in place to allow communities to independently operate and maintain them.

Freeing women from the responsibility to search and fetch water, is making it possible for them to lead productive lives of hope and dignity.

What Can You Do?
Join us was we combat the water crisis and work for the day when women are free from the all consuming search for water, making it possible for them to lead productive lives of hope and dignity in a world where everyone in the world can take a safe drink of water.

Visit Water.org for how you can be a friend to these millions of women. It’s just water … dirty water … and time out of their day (every day). We can help. We can make a difference.

Check out Water.org for all the info (& some really cool videos!).

Water is a basic right. Without it there is no hygiene, no food, no life! In many third world countries, the women are the glue that hold the community together. In Uganda, for instance, the majority of men are lazy, corrupted, and have no respect for the rights of women (and in many cases, children as well). I salute what water.org is doing, and thank you for this article that led me to learn about their efforts.
