Girlfriend review: Best Friends Forever
Do you have an old girlfriend from high school? Or elementary school? A friend from your past that you’ve lost track of?
In JENNIFER WEINER’s new book, Best Friends Forever, she explores the relationship of two girlfriends who went in different directions and now are exploring what it means to be in each other’s lives again. Here’s an interview with the author on her new book:
We’re fortunate to have a girlfriend, Amy Platt, to share this guest review of the book:
Years ago when I was commuting from Long Island into Manhattan for work, my daily three hours spent on the Long Island Railroad were often spent reading two, sometimes three books in a week. Now that I am minus one daily commute but plus two children, reading anything other than Dr. Seuss doesn’t often enter into my daily schedule. But sometimes, when my all time favorite authors release a new book, I’m able to sneak some quality reading time in while giving up cleaning, laundry and sometimes work. This is exactly what happened last week when I came across Jennifer Weiner’s latest novel, Best Friends Forever.
When nine-year-old Valerie Adler moves across the street from overweight nine-year-old Addie Downs, they immediately become best friends and as children often do, they both believe their friendship will last forever. After one high school event resulting in a friendship ending betrayal, Valerie moves on to form relationships with the popular crowd and Addie reverts back to her life as it was before Valerie - a very lonely existence for a very overweight girl with no friends and almost everyone thinking she is abnormal. After deciding not to attend their high school reunion, Addie is shocked to find Valerie standing on her doorstep late that evening, frightened and with blood on her coat sleeve pleading for Addie to help her. The book chronicles their ensuing adventures while simultaneously exploring the history of their friendship, the betrayal, loyalty, revenge, forgiveness and understanding.
Best Friends Forever was a little bit of a departure from Jennifer Weiner’s normal stories, but enjoyable all the same. Waffling back and forth between the past and the present was the perfect way to tell the story of Addie and Val and their tumultuous relationship from the beginning to the end. Jennifer Weiner has a unique way of building characters in her book so that readers can truly relate, feeling like you could be reading about someone in their own life. Overall, Best Friends Forever gets a thumbs up as a great chick-lit book, a fast and easy read and a must read for fans of Jennifer Weiner.
Amy Platt is a mom of a 6 year old and a 3 year old from Long Island, NY. As the founder of LIParentSource.com, an online guide that centralizes resources for Long Island families, Amy spends her days (and many nights) researching ideas and chasing down resources to pass along to local parents. Because she finds herself with so much free time (yeah, sure), you can also find Amy blogging about the antics of her two crazy kids at One Mom’s Memos.
Thanks Amy! Let us know your thoughts on this and other girlfriend books.
