Happy 4th of July girlfriend!
Every 4th of July we go over to girlfriend Penny’s fabulous neighborhood street party. From the patriotic songs to children decked out in red, white and blue in a parade of decorated bicycles, it is a wonderful celebration of Americana!
Even more than the cute kids and the abundant lunch, my favorite part is the friendship we share. Actually, we’re not just friends. We’re the family that we choose. We are comfortable in each others’ homes and lives. And that’s a wonderful feeling and friendship.
Girlfriend, what are you doing for the 4th? Any fun friend and family plans? Any traditions that you’d like to start – like inviting a girlfriend over for your picnic or taking a walk with a friend and catching up? Make Friends Before You Need Friends
Every other month I volunteer for a Job Seeker workshop. HR pros (like girlfriends Linda, Amelia and Jennifer) share great information to help those seeking their next career.
Advice they always share: Make connections before you need connections. Invest in people, and they’ll invest in you – and that includes time, interest and support.
The same is true with friends. Don’t wait until your kids are sick, your husband is out of town and you have to be at work to introduce yourself to a neighbor and ask her if she’d mind coming over and taking care of your children. It’s probably not gonna happen!
Connections and friendships happen over time and through interaction and communication. Even when we immediately feel like a person is ‘friend material,’ it takes time to get to know each other, to build trust and to ‘do life’ together.
Don’t wait until you need them, start building friendships TODAY by making some plans with a neighbor or a coworker with whom you share laughter and lunches. Invite a friend over for a 4th of July picnic or to go watch fireworks. Start a tradition of inviting a new friend along for your neighborhood party. You’ll both have a great holiday!
