The Truest Measure of Love | What our Friends Mean to Us
In honor of National Best Friends Day (June 8), we’re featuring your stories of great friendships. Here’s one from a ‘crazy Texan’ girlfriend who has such an amazing friend, Nancy.
“The truest measure of love is your willingness to put yourself aside. It is also the truest measure of friendship.”
I met Nancy in 1994 after we moved in across the street. She’d sit out on her front porch with her precious butterball of a baby boy, just watching the world go by, too shy to venture out. Fortunately, I’m not the shy type. Within a month Nancy and I were virtually inseparable. When Little A wouldn’t sleep at 3 A.M., I went over to rock him so she could finally get some rest. When my youngest son started using drugs and getting into trouble, she held me while I cried. Their decision to move three years later nearly ripped my heart out. What would I do without my best friend?
Thankfully, within a year of them moving, we also relocated. The house sold much more quickly than we’d expected and the new owners wanted to take possession almost immediately. With only a week to pack, the last thing I needed was for my 14-year-old, drug-addicted son to vanish on me, but vanish he did. In shock, I called Nancy. All she said was, “I’m on my way.”
An hour later a flu-infected woman with three-year-old and two-month-old babies in tow showed up at my house and told me to go find my son while she continued to pack. Nineteen hours later we’d found him passed out his dealer’s house and had admitted him to a rehab. Exhausted, we stumbled into the house dreading the task of packing that lay ahead. What we found was my wonderful friend with her two babies sleeping soundly in our bed in the middle of a house full of packed boxes.
All these years later, the fact that we don’t live across the street anymore has hampered our ability to hang out as much and our friendship has changed. But sometimes change is good – especially when friends become the family we choose to love. And to put ourselves aside for.
What friend(s) would pack up your house for you? And what girlfriend would you trust to be in your house and see ALL your stuff? That’s true friendship.
