Girlfriends don’t age, they just get better. Right?!

We met our freshman year in the dorm we would call home. We laughed at the same things, were raised similarly, both were the youngest of three girls (and our sisters have the same names!) and we were figuring out life and our first taste of freedom. I’ll confess that freedom sometimes got us in trouble (like those nights we’d take her VW Beetle out of town on adventures!) and our friendship grew. I totally take credit for her 20+ year marriage (I had to tell her he had a crush on her!) and she totally gets to take credit for raising two beautiful, smart, thoughtful kids who kindly call me “Aunt” since we’re almost sisters.

We’ve moved to different states, differed in our marital and childbearing status, have voted differently, followed our own unique career paths and eventually came to live in the same town again. We’ve witnessed college friends come and go from our lives (one recently and very sadly from cancer) and we continue to deal with aging parents and the stresses of life.

And still, we laugh at the same things. We enjoy walking together, having lunch (like we just did today), shopping (and often buying the same outfits) and just hanging out together.

How can life NOT be good with a friend like Barb? She’s been there for me and sees things in me that I can’t see myself. I know she cares about me and loves me with all my faults. And, even though we met in that dorm decades ago, she hasn’t aged a bit and I’m hoping I haven’t either. Because, we’re lifelong girlfriends. Ageless girlfriends. BFFs. And that’s a wonderful thing.
