Celebrating girlfriends – and girlfriend birthdays!

“Don’t just be a good girlfriend, be a GREAT girlfriend!”
That statement was part of my speech last night for the Mariemont Women’s event. My goal was to encourage 150 women to be better friends. Why strive for mediocrity? If you’re going to be a friend, be a GREAT friend!
In the spirt of that talk, and in anticipation of a fun Twitter party tomorrow night (hosted by my girlfriend Julie from “Free Birthday Treats“), here are some ideas for girlfriend birthday celebrations.
Please add your own birthday party ideas in the comments so we can inspire each other to be great friends to our girlfriends!
1. BARBIE ROCKS! The theme of last night’s event was BARBIE. She turned 50 this year and looks just as good as she did a long dang time ago. Party ideas (taken from this event, thanks to Kim and her girlfriends who hosted the fun party): all the girlfriends dress up like their favorite Barbie, have a Barbie trivia contest (for example, who are Midge’s grandparents??!), have Barbie cakes (this was a BIG hit last night, give away Barbie prizes and maybe even a date with “Ken.”
2. AGING GRACEFULLY - Is your girlfriend a fitness ‘freak?’ (Meant in the nicest possible way, of course!) Take a dance, yoga or pilates class together – or arrange for a private class with her favorite instructor. Have a healthy meal and possibly a walk afterwards (just to keep the birthday get-together going).
3. GOURMET GIRLFRIENDS - Does she know five or more types of squash? Is her kitchen filled with every appliance and cooking device? Well, keep with what she loves and make it a gourmet girlfriends night. Bring the ingredients for a wonderful dinner and cook it together. Or hire a chef/teacher and learn some new cooking skills and recipes. Make a girlfriend recipe book with all you and your friends’ favorite foods.
4. SPA GIRLS – Some of my girlfriends are just too dang healthy! (-; So, I know they’d prefer a guilt-free birthday event by getting a mani/pedi with the girls, add a facial or massage and they’re in birthday heaven! My girlfriend Becky and I did this for a birthday – but we started with a light Thai lunch and split a Thai beer. Just 1/2 of a beer totally relaxed us and we almost fell asleep in our facials!
5. GET CREATIVE, GET CRAFTY - Some of my girlfriends don’t care to craft – but a lot of them would rather do that than shop or get a mani/pedi. So, for their birthday, plan an evening (or a day if you can!) to make something together. Possibly some jewelry (to give the birthday girl) or make custom cards for her. Teach each other to knit or scrapbook. Just have fun and have a creative day together.
More to come! Gotta run!
