As Paula Abdul would say …
I’ve got three words for you: O – Ver – Whelmed!
One year ago today I quit my job. I started Girlfriendology in January 2006 partly because two girlfriends had been diagnosed with cancer and I was overwhelmed with the need for friendship and support. It grew to be a ‘love letter’ to my friends and my passion to inspire women to appreciate and celebrate their girlfriends.
After two years of working on Girlfriendology after hours and on weekends, I decided I had to LEAP. I quit my job – leaving the only paycheck in our house as well as paid insurance. We even went for weeks without insurance after I left. I’ve given up shopping, eating out and basically spending. I’m embarrassed to say that I don’t have Internet access on my phone because of the cost. I no longer remember my credit card number because I so rarely use it and I wear the same outfits as last year.
But I’ve never looked back with a second of regret. Sure, there are those three a.m.’s where I lie awake and wonder how we’ll pay bills or if other women will appreciate Girlfriendology enough to be part of this movement to inspire and support each other. Yes, I’ve looked at a want ad or two on days where I let my fears rise to top.But I have no ‘plan B.’ I am too old to try to be anything other than myself and I’m a passionate entrepreneur with a dream so I’m living the life I have to live.
But I can’t imagine my life without my Twitter girlfriends, the supportive women who’ve encouraged me, my advisers and coaches – officially or unofficially, to the girlfriends and guyfriends who have shared opportunities and recommendations (like the amazing Liz Strauss!) and my wonderful, supportive and patient husband Greg. I can’t go back to living an inauthentic life, and with the help of these caring friends, I won’t.
Thanks for O – Ver – Whelming me with your support, friendship and inspiration. I hope you too are living the life of your dreams and I pray you have friends around you to help, inspire and cheer you on. Life’s about the journey and you’ve made this one great for me. Thanks for an overwhelming anniversary!
p.s. One way to help me NOT have to wear the same outfits for years to come is to shop through the Girlfriendology Amazon link. We make just a little bit off that and if you’re buying all your furniture, appliances, electronics, etc. online – why not click through our Amazon link and show some Girlfriendology love?

Congratulations on your milestone!
You know, though, I think it’s Kara, not Paula, who says “I’ve got five words for you” and then lists seven.
Hi Debba,
It was great meeting you at SOBcon ‘09. I look forward to getting to know you better.
Have a great day!

Hi Ann – You know, I think we’re both right! I’ve heard both Paula Abdul and Kara count their words – and mis-count their words!
Four words for YOU!
Thank … you … for … sharing!

HOOORAY for you, Debba! Congratulations on another great year. How lucky we are to be included in the excitement.
I feel your joy (and pain) with regard to entrepreneurship, and agree whole-heartedly there’s not another place I’d like to be.
Happy Anniversary Debba!
Debba,
Congrats and thank you for all you do- here is to a more amazing 2009!
Love,
Sue
