Who are your ’sister-friends?’
Do you have sister-friends? Girlfriends who are more than BFF’s – they’re part of your family.
Each month for our Girlfriendology Contest we ask YOU for YOUR girlfriend stories. Since we’ve talked about sister-friends lately, this submission just seemed perfect to go ahead and post. (And don’t forget to send your stories in for a Starbuck’s gift card to take you and your girlfriend out for coffee on Girlfriendology and possibly a Girlfriendology girlfriend journal!)
From Brenda, here’s her girlfriend story:
My fabulous women’s story:
Recently I went to a Job Fair at my alma mater. Before it started there was a reception, so I stopped by. Being an older person most of the employers assumed I was one of them but I ‘m out here looking for a position after loosing a job I held for 19 years. Needless to say it’s been traumatic. Towards the end of the reception I found myself talking to a male student just starting to pursue his MBA and the options that would enhance his career path. Eventually the student asked me about my being there so I quickly told him. As I talked another person standing nearby, a women listened in. Afterwards, they asked a few questions, I answered. The Fair was about to start so I gave them both my card and went on my way. As I approached the job fair I was thinking how perceptive this woman was, afterall I had spoken at length with several people at the reception, and few seemed to get that I was looking for a position, even fewer what kind of position. But she came really close to getting it and understood without my having said so, some of the constraints and issues I might have.
To my surprise, later I received an email from this woman ( D) letting me know about a position she ran across and thought it might be what I was looking for. Little did she know that she had sent me a posting for the dream position I had already applied for and was at the Fair because I was hoping to make contact with someone from HR at that company. I sent an email back to let her know she was looking at my dream job, that I did make contact at the Job Fair (via another woman – E), that I had made it past HR and asked that she pray for me to get that interview and land this position. Even though E did not represent the area the dream position was in, she took the time to check the data base, assured me they had my application, took a copy of my resume and told me she knew the HR person that was handling the position and would make sure they saw my resume. When I got a call from the HR person that was handling the dream position letting me know they had already sent it to the selection committee I was speechless. (I’m sure I was babbling!) Yesterday I was checking my email and I got an email back from D, letting me know she was praying for me. Now that was no surprise, and I really needed that, D, knew it.
You see D, E and me are all older professional women. I’m an African American, D, and E are white but clearly they know “The Secret life of B’s”. Sister-friends, that is what my spirit calls D and E. They know me and I know them, even when we meet as strangers. That’s Girlfriendology!
