Women Helping Women – with a Makeover!
It’s a wonderful thing when women help women.
It inspires me and reminds me of the universal sisterhood we share – just in the simple act of making life a little better for another ‘girlfriend.’
The following guest blog shares how one woman (and some of her girlfriends), are making life better for women who need a little makeover:
A girlfriendship was beginning to form one cold day in January, 2007. Who could have imagined that a wall, a bed, a polka dotted pillow and a detour from “too busy highway” was paving the way for a friendship and inclusive sisterhood. Cyberspace, the new friend frontier, accelerated their meeting. Their friendship was to be formed for a purpose.
In January 2007, Terry Grahl received a call from a gentlemen asking for help. He said, ”we would be so grateful even if you just painted one wall.” Terry visited the shelter, and was saddened by the depressing conditions. Before leaving, Terry promised to do more than one wall. She vowed to create a space for those women and their children that would revive their broken spirits and help them heal. Ultimately Terry had found her calling and transformed her business, Terry’s Enchanted Cottage into Enchanted Makeovers (www.enchantedmakeovers.org) an organization that changes shelters for women and children into places of peace and possibilities.
670 miles away, Kim Lampe’s travels along “too busy highway” rendered her exhausted and unfulfilled in the essence that the fuel she expended was not worthy of dreams that were not her own. As Terry was transforming the lives of women “at risk”, Kim was transforming herself into The Dancing B*a*g Lady and a discovered a philosophy and a few simple words from which she could affirm her purpose. The inclusive sisterhood, Modern B*a*g (believe act go) Ladies (www.believeactgo.blogspot.com) was born to fuel the Belief in ladies so they were charge to take Action and Go to their dreams.
Social networking and blogging is what ultimately connected these ladies. If it were not for one comment that Terry had left on a blog, Kim may have never connected with Terry. After that entry Kim was able to connect Terry. Within four hours of sending that last email, Kim and Terry were talking on the phone. They hung up and promised to stay in touch.
Their friendship was forged by a few “not so chance” meetings in cyberspace and the common belief. They were fueled by the desire to make other women’s dreams come true. It was their purpose from the beginning. Today they continue to dream and share their dreams. Together they have hatched, “Project Traveling Sanctuary” a national campaign. As one girlfriend says, “Everyone gets a makeover”.
