5 Ways to Stop Suffering Winter Skin
In the fashion world, winter is marked by the fabrics we wear; wool, tweed and leather. Ironically, your skin can begin to mirror those scratchy, dull and irritating fabrics. How do you cope without loosing your mind? Focus on these 5 ways to stop and prevent suffering skin and your winter just may be a wonderland.
1. Exfoliate. Exfoliating helps dry skin cells on the surface of your skin detach from the layer below it resulting in cell stimulation through the deepest layers of your skin. The trick is not over-exfoliating which will damage the skin. How do you know you’ve found a good exfoliator? Look for beads or grains. They should barely be visible to the naked eye. A once-a-week exfoliation routine should be sufficient for all skin types.
Watch Out For products that suggest daily exfoliation.
Never exfoliate around the eye.2. Use a Masque. After exfoliation, it’s important to moisturize the newly exposed layer of skin. If you have normal to dry skin, use a super-hydrating cream masque. One favorite is the Intensive Moisture Masque from Laura Mercier. It has soothing agents and contains antioxidants that provide a boost to exposed skin cells. For oily skin, use a gel-based masque instead of a cream-based. A few to consider are Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Masque and Laura Mercier Hydra Soothing Gel Masque. Remember Use a masque the same night you exfoliate. Watch Out For overdoing it. Don’t leave the masque on too long or your skin will become oily.
3. Take extra special care of your eyes and lips. The sensitive skin around the eye area can take a real beating in winter weather. If you experience eye irritation in the winter, try a soothing home remedy of cool, sliced cucumbers on the eyes before you apply eye cream and after your skincare regime. Puffy eyes? Try steeped chamomile tea bags on the eye to reduce redness and puffiness. On a daily basis, use a ‘winter’ eye cream. Choose an eye cream for the winter months that is a little thicker than you’re used to. Stay away from ‘treatment’ eye creams and focus mostly on ‘hydrating’ eye creams. A thicker eye cream in the winter months will help to protect your eyes from the winter elements and reduce puffiness.
Lips are just as delicate as eyes, and there are two key ways to keep them ready for winter. Use a lip exfoliator up to twice a week. And, instead of using lip balm in your skincare routine, use eye cream on your freshly exfoliated lips. It will do the same for your lips as it does for your under-eye area. The biggest benefit is that it readily absorbs into fine lines. Pro Tip Use the lip exfoliator around the gentle skin of the nose.4.
Add in more moisture. You already use moisturizer, but amp it up a notch! If you have oily skin and use oil-free moisturizer, don’t switch to a heavy cream-just add moisture somewhere else in your routine. Try using a hydrating primer instead of a regular primer or use a hydrating toner. If you have normal to combination skin try using a hydrating serum once a day with a moisturizer or a more moisturizing night cream. For dry skin, jump up your daily moisturizer to a thicker formula. Be sure to look for a daily moisturizer that contains at least SPF 15, preferably SPF 30. Try Eucerin Sensitive Skin Everyday Protection Face Lotion with SPF 30. Watch Out For overdoing it. A little hydration can go a long way.
5. Anticipate irritants. Cold wind and sun are unavoidable damaging forces to our skin. UVA rays are still out and about even through the gray and cloudy skies. Scarves are one way to remedy the situation because they can protect the face from the elements in the same way a coat does for the body. If you experience facial chapping, burn or other irritation use products that are specific to calming skin. Natural ingredients like aloe, lavender and shea butter work to bring your skin back into balance and have been known to heal skin quickly and reduce inflammation. Clinique recently came out with Comfort On Call which is a great fluid-like moisturizer that aides in healing irritated skin. Watch Out For anything containing peppermint oil. Peppermint is an irritant.
The beauty of snow, ice dangling from trees and gatherings with our closest girlfriends on a cold night really can make for a special season; and with these 5 tips, you’re sure to have a beautiful and soft winter complexion.
