Thankfully female friends generally give great girlfriend gifts.

They know us well enough to pick up on things we’ll love – like the jacket Barb gave me for my birthday. We’re always attracted to the same clothes when we shop together so it was fun to have a matching jacket (that we’ll be careful not to wear to the same events!). Or the book, Eat Pray Love, that BFF Terri gave me last Christmas – she knew I’d love it, and I did. (I highly recommend this as a girlfriend gift too!)

I love my husband but he wasn’t the best gift giver when we were dating. In fact, he’s kinda been in the ‘guys doghouse‘ a couple times. One year he did the majority of my holiday shopping at Sam’s – I got a 12 pack of blank VCR tapes. (I know, you’re jealous – right?!) Or the year he did some last minute shopping at Wal-greens and I got a bag of tealights and a multipack of white t-shirts. (As I gently told him – “yes, I do use these things but I also use light bulbs too and don’t really want them for gifts.”) He’s improved and I’ve been better at giving him a list (which hopefully he follows!).

In writing a Girlfriendology blog on girlfriend gift ideas, I found this hilarious video from JCPenney on guys in the ‘doghouse’ for their bad gift selection. Just a little ‘public service announcement’ for any guys who find their way to Girlfriendology who are considering a vacuum cleaner or household appliance as a worthy holiday gift idea. Also a good video to show your husband or boyfriend if they’re still shopping for you.
