Oprah’s list – What she knows for sure …
What Does Oprah Know for Sure?
When the late film critic Gene Siskel interviewed Oprah for the movie Beloved, he turned to her at the end and asked her, “What do you know for sure?”. She couldn’t answer right away and took time to think about it and then came up with the following list.
Oprah’s List of: What She Knows for Sure
- What you put out comes back all the time, no matter what. (This is my creed.)
- You define your own life. Don’t let other people write your script.
- Whatever someone did to you in the past has no power over the present. Only you give it power.
- When people show you who they are, believe them the first time. (A lesson from Maya Angelou.)
- Worrying is wasted time. Use the same energy for doing something about whatever worries you.
- What you believe has more power than what you dream or wish or hope for. You become what you believe.
- If the only prayer you ever say is thank you, that will be enough. (From the German theologian and humanist Meister Eckhart.)
- The happiness you feel is in direct proportion to the love you give.
- Failure is a signpost to turn you in another direction.
- If you make a choice that goes against what everyone else thinks, the world will not fall apart.
- Trust your instincts. Intuition doesn’t lie.
- Love yourself and then learn to extend that love to others in every encounter.
- Let passion drive your profession.
- Find a way to get paid for doing what you love. Then every paycheck will be a bonus.
- Love doesn’t hurt. It feels really good.
- Every day brings a chance to start over.
- Being a mother is the hardest job on earth. Women everywhere must declare it so.
- Doubt means don’t. Don’t move. Don’t answer. Don’t rush forward.
- When you don’t know what to do, get still. The answer will come.
- “Trouble don’t last always.” (A line from a Negro spiritual, which calls to mind another favorite: This, too, shall pass.)

Everyone’s on a mission, all the time. Full stop.
Partnering with the process of living that mission will bring your mission roaring to life!
Discomfort won’t kill you. Running from it might.
The world NEEDS what you’re uniquely built to bring. The process of bringing it will make you what you’ve always wanted and dreamed you could be (from the inside out).
Being yourself makes magic happen, for you and everyone around you.
Being yourself in a world that wants to tell you how to be and when to be it is the hardest – and most rewarding thing – you’ll ever do.
Loving yourself isn’t something you can ‘do’ (or learn – sorry Oprah!). It just happens when you live your purpose and be yourself.
To be all we’re here to be, we must have at least one person in our corner. One person who really sees us and what we’re made of, and loves us enough to point out when we’re settling for or being anything less than our best.
Loving someone doesn’t require they love you back. Have the courage to love them anyway and they’ll come to both love and respect you. Don’t believe this one? Ask my stepkids!
Thanks Lissa! What I know for sure, after getting to know you, is that you are authentic and inspiring. Thanks for all you do!
As far as what I know for sure:
Live your life with passion – for friends, for dreams, for animals, for great memories.
James Taylor wrote: “The Secret of Life is enjoying the passage of time.” I agree – do what is worthy of spending your limited, shrinking time on. (Not to be ‘half empty,’ but it’s true!)
We’re all creative. Proclaim your creative heritage and gifts – and embrace it!
Tell those you love how you feel about them. Hug – a lot. Compliment friends and strangers. Make someone’s day as often as you can.
YOUR IDEAS? What do YOU know for sure?
