TIP TUESDAY #34: Girlfriend Advice for Moving

My girlfriend Jill is moving and needs some girlfriend advice. It’s just across town, or kinda out in the country, but as is true with all of us, she has some ’stuff’ to do to make the big move. ‘Stuff’ like packing up boxes of belongings, preparing her house to sell it, getting everything from point A to point B.
I wish I lived closer and could help so I’m asking for your help. As girlfriends our combined knowledge is so strong that I’m sure you have some amazing, time-saving and stress-relieving advice for preparing a house to sell, staging it for maximum sell price, packing up, moving and getting settled into a new house.
Our TIP TUESDAY QUESTION IS:
What girlfriend advice do you have for moving? What packing tips? Home staging advice? Getting settled into your new home? How can you make this process of moving and selling a home the best it can be?
To get us started I did a little research on moving tips. About.com had some great advice for moving your home.I’ve moved LOTS but this article shares things I never thought of. However, my friend Jill needs your help in making her move as smooth as possible. Won’t you share?!
So, now it’s YOUR TURN! Be a friend and share your girlfriend advice for moving.

I’ve moved SO many times! Instead of newspaper for packing breakables, I use plastic grocery bags. I always have a ton of them, and I don’t get yucky news print on my hands.
Thanks a bunch Girlfriend! I look forward to reading any good tips that come in on moving! Thanks for the help and the post.

I too have moved many, many times. Some helpful hints…
*Never put anything valuable or nostalgic on a mover’s truck. Ever.
*Pack an ‘overnight box’ – stuff you will need immediately – shower items, paper plates/utensils, toilet paper, phone, etc.
*Clearly label all boxes by room, then by content. Then ask the movers to place the boxes in the corresponding rooms.
*When packing clothes, I leave everything on hangers. Gather into groups of 10 or so, put a zip tie around the necks of the hangers, then cover with a large plastic trash bag (cut a small hole in the bottom of the bag and place upside down over clothes and tie the bottom).
*Enjoy the process. This is your opportunity to re-organize, re-group, and re-start!
Great tips Carla and Mary! Thanks for sharing!
We also use ‘things’ to wrap ‘things.’ Like use your towels to wrap dishes, or put blankets around lamps or breakables.
I agree with Carla again too – on re-organizing and re-starting. I don’t want to move but I definitely need some of that! Thanks for sharing – Debba / Girlfriendology
We do relocation/unpacking services, and here are a few tips from the field:
1. DECLUTTER your life as much as possible FIRST. There is no sense in moving things you don’t even need to keep.
2. Use your towels and linens to wrap breakables. You have to pack them anyway, so why not save the paper?
3. Don’t use newspaper for packing! Use newsPRINT. That’s the paper WITHOUT the ink. Newspaper ink gets everywhere. You can buy a ream of any size newsprint online at dickblick.com
4. Label your boxes with the room they are going TO, not the room they came FROM.
5. Number each box and then keep a corresponding inventory sheet with the contents of each box. This way, if you use movers, they won’t be able to tell what’s in each box, but you will simply by matching the number to your inventory sheet.
6. Stay focused. Have the movers drop each box in the room it belongs in, then start in one room and stay there until all your boxes are empty before moving to the next room. That being said…
7. Set up the new bedroom and kitchen first. You may not get the stereo set up or the guest room put together, but at the end of day one, at least you’ll be able to go to sleep and cook a meal.
8. Ask for help unpacking. Moving is way more fun if you can share the work with a friend. And be sure to take them out to dinner as a thank you.
