Podcast #66 – Girlfriendology celebrates National Women’s Friendship Day (+ Aug. Contest Winners)
It’s a big holiday here at Girlfriendology! Sept. 21 is National Women’s Friendship Day and we’re busy girls! We’re hosting parties, writing articles for About.com and Sparkpeople.com, doing guest blogs (like for Vicky and Jen, Phyllis Dobbs, Lifestyle Fitness and more!); and getting some local and national press on the BIG day.

It’s easy to get busy and forget about the reason we’re so busy. Thankfully, I have girlfriends who remind me why we’re celebrating the amazing women we each call our girlfriends, our BFFs, gal pals, sisters and best friends. A few reminders:
- A definite BFF of mine is going through some tough times. It’s a great reminder that I need to take time away from all my work and the busy-ness to talk with her, spend time together, give her my full attention. A great reminder.
- One of our contest winners wrote in with an additional story about a dear friend. I love that she recognizes this special friendship, trusts Girlfriendology to share it and has the need to inspire others. We’re all the better for the inspiration she offers:
I am making an effort to invest in my friendships. I have a friendship from when I was 5 years old and moved to the city and met my downstairs neighbor, (another Debbie)! Her family has called me Debbie Kay ever since to differentiate us. In Kindergarten we were split apart cause I was a year older, but that didn’t stop us. When we were kids we enjoyed making huge tents on clotheslines outside. We also started a campfire in her basement in a hub cap!
We drifted apart in junior high as I had moved to a different side of school. Then in high school we were back to hanging out, getting caught for skipping class and both pleading the 5th. We went out and met boys together, got drunk together and all that sassy stuff! She met the father of her oldest son when she was with me! Later on he babysat my little boy!
I met my husband through her and her first husband. Hubby and I were there for her when she was going through her divorce. She “forced me” to call in sick and go to Country Jam in Oshkosh with her the first month of my new job. It was just like being kids again.
No matter how much time passes, we are always friends. Our lives have been connected for over 50 years. Debbie is in poor health now. Both of us have grown children, but we still enjoy our hobbies and reconnecting our lives. Life is too precious and so our friendships to just let them wither and die. We have to keep nurturing them to nurture our own souls.
This story is just one of so many that come into Girlfriendology. Some make us laugh, a lot make us cry and all of them make us thankful for the friends who bless our lives.
Listen into this special podcast with the winners from the August Contest as well as our update on National Women’s Friendship Day (Sept. 21). Then send us your stories, share your thoughts, call your girlfriends and thank them for the amazing gift of their friendship.
