girlfriend guru, be a better friendIf you were going to die soon and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you say?  And why are you waiting?  ~Stephen Levine

We are so fortunate to have reminders in our lives. From post-it notes to strings around a finger to notes on coffee mugs to cell phone alarms, we have about a zillion ways to be reminded to get things done. There are days when I need every single one of those reminders.

Today, Girlfriend Guru ARLETT R. HARTIE reminds us how important taking care of ourselves and our relationships is. Is there someone you haven’t called in a while? Pick up the phone today, girlfriend. This is your official reminder.

Hey girlfriends. I have to start this post with an apology. I have been MIA in Girlfriendology for a little while and I am sorry for my absence. Now hold on before you give me the side eye I have a good excuse. My mom had been sick and in the hospital for a little while. She has been diagnosed with an illness. The blessing is that her doctors feel she will recover. There are a few rough weeks/months ahead of us but with lots of prayer she will get through it all.

Now, I don’t like to say there is a bright side to these kinds of things. No one wants to be sick or have their loved one be sick. The idea that there could be anything “bright” about these situations can be perceived as insulting and insensitive. So, I am not going there.

However, I will say these types of life events do call us to re-examine our priorities. In almost all cases relationships win. Being there for our loved one becomes paramount. Work, blogging, social activities, etc… all become secondary while the care for and time focused on our loved one, in my case my mom, become top priority.Relationships are what count, friendships

So I’m going to challenge you girlfriends. It’s actually a pretty easy challenge as it does not require you to do anything but think. I want you to think about who are those top priority people in your life. Who are you willing to push everything to the back burner for? I’m sure some of your girlfriends make the list. Now, think about if you treat the relationship with the respect that it is due. Do your top priority people know that they are top priority? Do you make time for them in regular circumstance and through the mundane times of life? Don’t wait for emergency situations where you have to stop everything to show them they are important. Remember, relationships are what count Girlfriend.

PS. I appreciate you all remembering my mom in your prayers over the next few weeks.
