The best thing about having friends is that they are always there for us. Just think of all the times your BFF has been there for you in big and little ways. (Thanks to all girlfriends everywhere–we probably don’t say it enough.)
Guest blogger SARAH BOUCHER shares her story about her best girlfriend being there for her–without question, without judgement, without holding back. Just like a great friend should be!
I pulled my minivan into a parking space and waited for my girlfriend Beth to emerge from her one bedroom apartment.
Our lives were and still are as different as day and night.
- I was a young wife and am a mother to five great kids. Beth would love to be and have both of these blessings.
- Beth is extremely tidy and organized. I am neither.
- Beth is right on top of the latest trends while I am a decade or two behind. No—seriously.
- Beth will admit that she really cares about appearances. I am a rebel at my core. I love individuality.
- Beth is a worry wart. I roll with the punches.
Despite these differences, our friendship has only flourished over the years.
I wish I had a camera to capture the image of my best friend as she walked out of her apartment that day proudly displaying a homemade sign with two words on it.
Earlier that afternoon, my husband told me that he didn’t feel like he was cut out for married life. This announcement not only rocked my world, but also the worlds of those around us. We had one of those legendary marriages. We were meant to be like Adam and Eve, Romeo and Juliet, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson. Taking one of us out of the equation was like sitting down to eat a bag of M without the other & M’s.
On this day when my stable world was crumbling apart, that sign meant the world to me. It simply said—Team Sarah. (This will mean something to those of you who remember Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston’s divorce. Everyone was either Team Anniston or Team Jolie.)
- I am here for you today.
- I will always be here for you.
- I will watch you cry.
- I will listen to you defend him even though I want to kill him.
- When things get worse, I will care for your kids so you can grieve properly.
- I will celebrate with you when life returns to normal, but until then you are not alone.
I can’t for the life of me figure out how some marriages make it though those rocky times and others don’t. I am thankful that my husband and I survived Round 1 of life’s hard knocks. I would love to believe that we will die an old married couple, but now I’ve experienced how fragile marriage is. There are no guarantees no matter how sincere or lovely the wedding day promises are.
Some people in our lives are like crystal balls—almost too fragile to handle. Girlfriends are like bouncy balls—always fun and able to withstand all the bumps of life.
SARAH BOUCHER is a stay at home mother of five. She describes herself as having been completely disorganized, lonely, and overwhelmed by life until she read a motivational book that changed the course of her life. Sarah is now in training to have conversations with women that allow them to experience their value and worth and see the choices they have in any situation.
Tell us about a time when a girlfriend was there for you—and made a huge difference in your world. Who’s on YOUR Team?
Thanks Sarah for sharing – and thanks Beth for being the girlfriend who was and is there for her. I’m so glad we have our girlfriends! & YEAH Team Sarah
