You know how sometimes you and a girlfriend see the exact same thing and yet describe it completely differently? We decided it would be fun to send two of our fab friends out together and have them both write about the experience. We sent Nutrition Guru LISA MCDANIEL BROWN and the ever hilarious FAUX DIET QUEEN out to a local Whole Foods grocery store to see what would happen. Not only did the Faux Diet Queen (FDQ to her friends) learn something a bit more than she ever thought she could, they had a great time (no surprise there).

On a recent warm and sunny Sunday afternoon I met my girlfriend the Faux Diet Queen and one of her kids at our local Whole Foods Market. Why would we spend a gorgeous afternoon inside a grocery store?? To learn!
As a Health and Wellness Coach, I spend my time helping others eat healthier, feel better, lose weight, and conquer their sugar addictions. One of the first steps in that process is showing them where to find organic, whole foods that nourish and fuel their bodies, as opposed to foods that feed their taste buds and satisfy their emotional cravings – there is a big difference!
Faux burst my “fun bubble” when one of the first things she said upon entering Whole Foods was, “I hope you don’t ask me to eat kale.”
Uh oh. It was at the top of my list. Literally!
Kale is the first food I introduce to people on a health food store tour. It’s a green, leafy vegetable full of magnesium, potassium, iron, and zinc. Turns out the Faux Diet Queen had a negative experience with the smell of kale when she was pregnant with her first child and she hasn’t gotten over it—17 years later. Girlfriend, you gotta let that go! For the health of it!
She was a good sport though and had her kid choose some kale promising she would try it again. As a Health and Wellness Coach, that’s all you can ask…
While introducing them to peanut butter made from just, you know – peanuts – a cute, young couple came up and grabbed a jar of vanilla peanut butter. They were so excited about having found it that I had to ask what it was. They both raved about how it tastes like a peanut butter cup so I immediately read the food label. Turns out the ingredients aren’t that bad…FDQ and kid chose the chocolate peanut butter as a special treat.
By the way, the idea of oil floating on top of natural peanut butter – Faux made a face that let me know she wasn’t going for it. Having to stir oil in peanut butter was a deal breaker. We all have our limits. We moved on.
There is so much to discover in a Whole Foods Market or a health food store. Gather up a couple of girlfriends and enjoy lunch at your local Whole Foods. Then venture around the store and choose three items you’ve never tried before. Take them home with you! Consider it a healthy GNO! (Girls Night Out)
This is what I was able to create with my groceries that day. We enjoyed it with hummus on the side…..and a glass of red wine (full of antioxidants!).
