Ruth Sara, me and Becky, by JillThat’s my Friday morning. Usually around 4am or so, I’ll wake up to finish the weekly Girlfriendology newsletter. On rare (and bad!) mornings, my wifi doesn’t work (like this morning) so I head off to my cool church which offers the mall-like lobby for everyone (along with free wifi and coffee – bonus!).

Around 8am my girlfriends come for our Friday morning catch-up. Becky, Jill, Ruth Sara and I share our news, tears, laughs and lives in the comfort only found among girlfriends. More coffee, conversation, coffee, bathroom breaks and updates ensue as we ‘do life’ together. (Photo from this morning – Jill took it because she wasn’t up to being in it!)

Then, after an hour or so of casual, comfortable, wonderful girlfriend conversation, it’s back to finishing the weekly newsletter. Thankful for my friends and bottomless addictive beverage of choice, appreciative of a creative venue and wifi, it’s my favorite day of the week. I get to talk with them and then talk with you. I’d love it if you talk back. Share a comment. Forward the newsletter to a friend (and sign up for it!). Just keep the conversation (and possibly the coffee) going. That’s what life is about. Thanks for letting me share.

Dear Girlfriend,

Girlfriendology“If ever there is a tomorrow when we’re not together, there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart. I’ll always be with you.”

Winnie the Pooh was one smart bear. Loyal to his friends and aware of the blessings they were in his life, he said other great things like:

“If you live to be 100, I hope I live to be 100 minus 1 day,
so I never have to live without you.”

No Facebook “what character are you” test necessary, we probably can identify with happy Pooh, melancholic Eeyore, enthusiastic Tigger or timid Piglet. Perhaps some of our friends reflect those Pooh-sonalities. (Sorry!) But what makes any group, is our differences. Our unique views and interaction are what form bonds and teach us lessons – when we see things from another’s perspective.

What lessons can you learn from Pooh? What friends teach us with their differences, bond with us with our similarities and inspire us with their generous ability to share? And, which friends remind us that we really are braver, stronger and smarter than we can even see ourselves?

Take a lesson from the bear and see the best in your friends. Appreciate them and enjoy time in their company. Life is better together – with your girlfriends!

Happy International Friendship Day – Belated!

Debba Haupert, founder of Girlfriendology
Last weekend was International Friendship Day. Why didn’t we give you some advanced warning?! Well, because we believed Wikipedia who said (initially) that it was THIS weekend. Nonetheless, it deserves celebrating – everyday!

Here are a few ideas for celebrating:

  • Write a nice card for your friend telling them how much you appreciate their friendship. Spill out your heart to them as though there is no tomorrow.

  • Buy or make them a small present - flowers, chocolates, friendship bands, a cake, friendship journal or anything that catches your imagination!
  • Hug someone, preferably your friend!

  • Make your friend a mixed CD of all the songs that define your friendship – or ones that you just happen to mutually like! (These and more are on Friendship.com.au!)

Every friendship is different so come up with your own way to celebrate and to show your girlfriends how much you appreciate them. Then, share your ideas on Girlfriendology. (And our community, where you can join for free and share girlfriend advice, wisdom, laughs, stories and more, will launch later this month!)

It doesn’t have to be Valentine’s Day to tell your sweetie what they mean to you, right? Celebrate your girlfriends all year ’round. You’ll be so glad you did!

Happy International Friendship Day! Thanks for being a friend!!

THANKS Girlfriend! Have a fun, friend-filled week!!
