Hey Girlfriend – Make any New Year’s Resolutions?
Did you resolve to get healthy, lose weight, start yoga, stop smoking? Want to follow your dream and start a business? Travel to places you’ve always dreamed of? Well, as girlfriends, we have the awesome duty of encouraging and helping you achieve those dreams and sometimes that means helping you keep your resolutions (and having your help with our own). So here goes …
Common Girlfriend Resolutions:
Be a Better Friend - Feeling girlfriend gratitude for the women who bless your life with their friendship? Or, feeling a bit of guilt about not spending as much time with your girlfriends as you’d like? Just think how wonderful 2009 with your girlfriends by your side! Show your appreciation with girlfriend gifts like this silver necklace or a thoughtful girlfriend gift. Celebrate friendship and make great memories together!
Stop Smoking – A doctor told me once nicotine is more addictive to women than men. In fact, he compared the physical dependence as …
More girlfriend New Year’s Resolutions …
… similar/difficult as cocaine addiction. And as a girlfriend with a BFF who smokes, I worry about her and wish badly that she would quit smoking. So, I looked up a few aides to stop smoking. If you’re a smoker, please, for your girlfriends (and everyone who loves you), make 2009 the year that you quit. Thanks!
Lose Weight – Every year I have this on my list. I start out watching what I eat, but without a real plan for losing weight, I easily slip back into my old eating habits and nothing changes. The times a diet has worked for me has been when it is an actual plan like a diet book that makes it doable. I love how diets have now adapted to our eating lifestyles like those that share how to make good fast food decisions. Prevention magazine found that those who had successful diet partners dropped twice as many pounds after a year of serious weight loss effort than those who dieted on their own. So, find a diet/plan you and your girlfriend can do together and you’re even more likely to be successful!
Exercise! – It’s not a great time of year to get out and start a walking or running program, but that doesn’t mean you or a girlfriend can’t find ways to exercise and get stronger and healthier. I’m going to commit to doing yoga and/or pilates twice a week and hopefully I’ll be able to talk my girlfriends into joining me so I stick with it! So, for Christmas I asked for a yoga mat and am planning to sneak in a practice session with a yoga video before walking in as a yoga newbie. Yep, I need to get a girlfriend to go with me. Find a girlfriend and go exercise – get healthy together!
Improve our financial situation – Sure, 2008 ended on a tough economic note. That doesn’t mean that we can’t make 2009 a strong, successful year. As women, we often can talk to our girlfriends about almost everything – except our finances. Since we learn so much from each other, a video like “Women & Money” by Suze Orman would be a great way to start the conversation between girlfriends on how to better understand investments, budgeting, debt and more financial lessons. Learn, and save, together!
Get organized – Life is stressful enough, especially if you’re unorganized! The New Year is a great time to commit to getting more organized at your home, business and just life in general. And, it’s also a great goal to make with a girlfriend – to help each other get organized and hold each other accountable so we keep at it. This book might help – One Year to an Organized Life: From Your Closets to Your Finances, the Week-by-Week Guide to Getting Completely Organized for Good by Regina Leeds. Or, How Did I Get So Busy? – The 28-day Plan to Free Your Time, Reclaim Your Schedule, and Reconnect with What Matters Most. Let us know how you and your girlfriend help each other make 2009 the year you both get organized!
Travel with a Girlfriend – Women’s travel is the fastest growing travel segment. Why? Because women love to go on girlfriend getaways. (Recently we had a podcast interview with Casey Wohl, author of Girl’s Getaway books – listen in for her advice!) Want to spend more time with your girlfriend? Have a BIG birthday to celebrate or just need to get away and reconnect? Plan a girlfriend together. Not sure where to go? Wow! I am so honored to see my book “One Year to an Organized Life” included here! If anyone has questions as she goes through the weeks, I would happily answer them. You can e-mail me from my website.
Getting organized shouldn’t be scary. It’s just a skill and it can be learned step by step … just like the piano, tennis or any other skill you can think of. Coming home to a nurturing environment is always important but especially these days with the news being so gloomy. It will all turn around and every calm, peace filled environment created this year contributes to the global mentality.
Happy New Year, Ladies!
Blessings,
Regina Leeds

Debba,
You are so right. I was talking to Dr. Michael Roizen (of Roizen and Oz fame) last year about how to keep clients on track once they met their goals (lost the weight, fixed the cholesterol number, etc). He said the number one factor for maintaining a healthy lifestyle is social support. In other words–GIRLFRIENDS! Chance are 2 out of 3 that someone you know also shares the weight loss/health improvement goal, so give her a call or drop her a line and ask her to go for a walk with you!
