Dear Girlfriend,In some ways, October is National Support Your Girlfriends Month. Why? Because October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Both of these situations impact our girlfriends in tragic ways without any provocation or reason. Each challenge us to draw on our girlfriends for strength and community, for assistance and support, and for friendship and love.
While Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence are both horrible, our awareness of them teaches valuable lessons. We need to remind our girlfriends to practice self-exams as this still is the earliest method for discovering the most prominent cancer among women in the U.S. And, we need to be aware of the signs of domestic violence and offer our support and assistance.
We count on our girlfriends to be there for us, and we need to model this behavior with every opportunity. Talk about these tough subjects. Be informed and share your knowledge. Open up the discussion so we can all learn from each other and take care of our friends.
This month, and every month, support your girlfriends. That’s what girlfriends do.

“The Secret of Life is Enjoying the Passage of Time.” James Taylor
I love that quote. It reminds me to appreciate and enjoy those moments when I get to be with my girlfriends. Walking with Barb yesterday, talking to Rhonda this weekend, hearing from Allison, seeing my friend Jill last weekend - I want to remember and appreciate time with each of them.
With whom do you pass your time? When was the last time you met a girlfriend for coffee or to go for a walk? How could you make a friend’s day? How can you be a better friend?
Make an effort. Spend some time. Reflect on memories. And, be there for your girlfriends to support them through any illness, struggle or challenge. Celebrate the good times. Share your life. That’s what girlfriends do.
Thanks girlfriends! Your friend,
