Girlfriendships make you healthier, less-stressed and live longer - right?! Kinda like exercise. Now, combine the two and you’ve got a double dose of self-care and physical benefits. This week we’re asking for your girlfriend advice on exercise. What can you share that will make it easier to get healthier?
Our TIP TUESDAY QUESTION IS:
What’s your best exercise tip(s) or advice for girlfriends?
I’ll get us started. I met Allison at a dinner party in 2001. She mentioned that she was in training to walk a marathon. It sounded interesting to me, so I asked if I could start training with her and the rest is history. We walked 26.2 miles that year and now meet with Colleen, Nancy and others most Saturdays for 4-6 miles of walking and talking. What keeps us going is exercising together. If they’re not able to walk, I could get up and go on my own, but generally I’ll choose to sleep in. I need those girlfriends to get me going!
There’s a local group of women who have banded together to help each other lose weight. Check out Cincinnati Losers for several girlfriends who are challenging each other to get in shape. Maybe you can form a girlfriend group like this. If so, share your progress and how their support made a difference in your results.
So, now it’s YOUR TURN! Be a girlfriend and share your exercise tips. What has worked for you in getting healthy through exercise?

I think the best tip I have is to find something you love to do. For me - I love dance. I’ve danced my whole life - and doing something I love makes it easy to fit movement into my life.
The other thing is - don’t stress over it. Any amount of movement is a good thing - especially when you’re just starting out. Yeah, you want to strive for 30 minutes 5 times a week - but don’t stress over it or you’ll just not want to do it.
Again - find something you love that doesn’t feel like a chore and that 30 minutes 5 times a week will feel like nothin’
Wake up before the family each day. Go on to myyogaonline.com choose a 15-30 minute yoga or pilates workout. Feel refreshed and centered to start each day.
I LOVE this plan. It has really worked for me. I work hard to commit to the early morning just for myself….although sometimes my children or husband will suprise me and wake up to join me:)
This tip won’t work for everyone, but I highly recommend getting a dog! I’ve lost so much weight since I adopted my boxer/heeler mix puppy. How can you say no to a long daily walk from those sweet eyes?
If becoming a pet owner doesn’t work for you, my next tip is to pick up a home exercise bike, stairclimber or other machine and get hooked on a new TV series. Make yourself only watch the 1-hour show when you’re doing your workout. Then exercise becomes something you look forward to!
