TIP TUESDAY #30: Girlfriend advice for Cleaning?

Tip TuesdayMy girlfriend Amy is coming to town this week. Dog hair, dust and dirty floors, aside - I can’t wait to see her! But what’s a girl do to clean in the least amount of time?!

Girlfriend advice is the greatest because our friends know us and (hopefully) know things we need to know to make life easier and better. So, I’m turning to you, my girlfriends, to share some cleaning advice.

Our TIP TUESDAY QUESTIONS ARE:

What do you clean when you find out company is going to be at your home in 15 minutes?

How do you keep your windows or floors clean?

What household cleaning secrets do you have?

Gigi Garner has some great girlfriend advice. And, she generously shares it with the world in her new book, Girl Talk. First, she is James Garner’s daughter so she grew up in Hollywood and has a lot of celebrity friends. She decided to ask them and other extraordinary women to share their secrets - and they did! From Jamie Lee Curtis to Joan Rivers, Sally Struthers to Sari Belafonte - even celebrity girlfriends have great advice and share it in Girl Talk.

A few cleaning tips from her book:

  • Use rubbing alcohol to clean the chrome in your home (from Alexandra Cannon, matchmaker)
  • Another use for rubbing alcohol, Naomi Judd recommends it for removing makeup that gets on your clothes. Just dab some on a clean cloth and gently rub on the stained area.
  • Need some organization in your jewelry storage? Use ice cube trays to store earrings for an organized vanity. (Joan Clifft, Marketing Director)

I interviewed Gigi for an upcoming podcast and she, like her book, has a wealth of information - the great girlfriend advice kind-of-information and she’s willing to share. She’s great and so is her book!

So, now it’s YOUR TURN! Be a girlfriend and share your cleaning tip. Make life easier for your friends - maybe you’ll both have more time to spend together if you do!

I written most of my housekeeping solutions in this post: http://www.solutionsforbusymoms.com/blog/2006/12/5/solutions-for-julie-part-1-housekeeping-help.html — there’s lots of good stuff in there.

Since then, I have found another great solution. I learned the Family Manager system and learned to manage my house — including the housekeeping — by department. Plus I’ve created systems for each department. You can learn more at http://www.FamilyManagementForBusyMoms.com

I vacuum everything, carpet, floors, bird cage dust and in a pinch with a brush tool makes a good duster.

a bit off topic, but I make a lot of costume jewelry and they are forever getting tangled — necklaces and earings. I purchased a lot of inexpensive 3M sticky hooks and have hung them on one side of my walk-in closet and have hung my necklaces there. This way, they don’t tangle, they go on easy and it’s a snap to find an outfit and accessories that match! For the earings, I took a mesh pencil holder and have put the earing backs through the mesh. Again, keeps them organized and makes choosing your earings much easier!
